Hello,
My daughter was accepted at UMD as a traditional student (graduated HS in May of 2015). She chose to go another well-regarded school in another state. She took a rigorous course load (organic chemistry and other difficult classes) and did very well (over 3.7). However, her second semester (this past spring) turned out to be a nightmare. She got a concussion and a close family passed away after a long illness. She decided in May to transfer and to go to school closer to home. She missed the early application for UMD and applied as a regular transfer. Much to our surprise, she found out today that she was denied admittance. Our older daughter is a rising junior at UMD and found out that a VERY large percentage of the early transfer applicants accepted admission. She is now facing a big quandary. She really wants to go to UMD and is kicking herself for not going there originally (alas hindsight is 20/20). She is now strongly considering taking classes at UMD as a non-degreed student and reapplying by the August 1st deadline for spring admission. I feel really bad for her - she’s crushed and now feels like a kid without a school. Should see enroll in classes as a non-degreed student and take her chances that she will get in? We know that she has the brains and motivation to succeed at UMD. If anyone has any ideas about what we might want to try to do, let me know. Can she call and plead her case to admissions? Thanks in advance.
@DavidHopkins Im sorry that your child was not accepted. My friend (or supposed to be roommate) was deferred from the priority deadline and moved to postponed. He was promised admission if he meet this program requirement which he did, however due to space availability he was denied and deferred until spring. I would recommend her to enroll in a community college in the fall semester and then reapplying to college park for spring.
