Survey for Yale EA admitted
I have heard that many top students got deferred to Yale EA. The only one got accepted who is living closer to Yale comparing to Harvard/Princeton. My hypothesis is that Yale wants to keep the yield by accepting the ones they will matriculate. I made this survey to find out if it’s true.
If your home is close to either Yale or Harvard/Princeton put 0 otherwise put 1 in the following format:
Yale vs. Harvard/Princeton
1. 0 vs. 1
2.

I don't think location has anything to do with it (aside from ensuring geographic diversity). I doubt anyone is penalized if they live in Cambridge or Princeton...in fact, I know someone from Princeton who was accepted. However, your hypothesis that they want to accept kids they know will matriculate is correct. A friend of mine went to an info session at Yale earlier this year and they said that they were really looking for commitment. For example, did any of the recs mention Yale was the student's first choice? Did the 'why yale' essay demonstrate clear interest in Yale? Etc, etc...

Yale is in between Harvard and Princeton for me...lol. that would be foolish of them to base it off how far how you lived from their rivals.

I think a survey could be interesting.

I'm far away from all of the Ives (the midwest) but I did make a strong case for Yale in my essay. I love the school, and it really came through in my writing. That makes a difference, but only if you can speak sincerely. I know a lot of kids who wrote "residential colleges... collaborative... etc. etc." This is all good material, but anyone who read the guidebooks could just quote it to sucker Yale admissions (but I am sure they see right past that). I was lucky enough to have spent considerable time at Yale the summer before I applied, and I could speak from the heart about why I loved what Yale has to offer. My advice is to speak to current students and visit for a while, if possible. Then you will see some of the great things about Yale... the details that make it a lot more than just another "brand-name" school.

you wrote a Why Yale? essay for your supplement?
o.O???

Plenty of kids wrote from the heart about why Yale was special to them and got deferred.

Trying to figure out why one kid was accepted and another deferred is foolish. Adcoms themselves when asked have been heard to utter the word "crapshoot."

Good thing I have some vodoo magic to trick those adcoms. I put the bmwdanian generic "residential colleges" in my 300 characters AND was favoring Harvard over Yale when I got accepted EA. However, now Yale is really starting to grow on me, and I almost want to be rejected from Harvard so I don't have to make that morbid choice...

Cali kid right here.

Sorry, but the theory behind this survey is basically preposterous...hahaha.

Haha Remi, I'm in the EXACT same position as you. Spent about 15 minutes writing about residential colleges on Oct. 31 for my why Yale, and had no real preference between HYP, but I still got in. Like you, however, Yale is really starting to grow on me and is beginning to emerge as my #1.

Is anyone seriously suggesting proximity in Yale's EA decisions? Yale is a business like any other private U and makes decisions in this light. From what I've seen this year, I'd say Yale admitted top-draw candidates and some dim jocks.
