Survey

Anyone else get the survey request about their intentions? Anyone know if this is a student specific survey (will they know it came from me??) or just general information collection for PC to get a feel for enrollment?

~Thx

I don’t know, but when my d was filling it out, she asked if she should tell the truth about where on her list Providence is. I told her put that she definitely wants to attend, because I thought maybe they were using it to put financial aid pkgs. together. For us, the truth is she will probably go wherever has the smallest out of pocket cost, because she would be content at any of her choices. I suppose if Providence wanted honest answers, maybe they should have let the kids know if it was anonymous or not.

My D didn’t get a survey. Did it come snail mail or email? If it’s about financial aid, I hope she gets it because Providence is her first choice.

Came on email. When you click the link it brings you to some survey companies website where there are 6 questions like… would you have applied early if we only had ED, Where does PC rank on your choices, and Your probability of attending.

The survey responses are blind unless the student wishes to withdraw and uses the comment section of question 6 to disclose their name and the institution they will be attending.

The survey has nothing to do with financial aid packages. As noted in the information that was sent to those invited at early action, the Committee on Admission is trying to guage the depth of the interest from the early action group to help inform the decision-making process for regular decision. Providence College does not award merit or need-based financial assistance on the basis of demonstrated interest. So putting “will definitely attend” when that is not the truth only sends a false message for the review process.

I hope this is helpful.

This info was indeed helpful. Thank you. I wish we had had it before we filled out the survey.

The truth of the matter is Providence is #2 on her list, and she will definitely attend IF the financial aid is better than her #1 choice. However, she will not even have an admission decision from her #1 choice until April. “Definitely” is hard to say when one is lacking all the info to make a decision.

That said, I wish more schools were like Providence and offered early action. I do understand, though, that it must be more difficult to gauge how many offers of admission to extend in the regular decision round. Enrollment management must be very hard.

And, since it sounds as if you are a member of the admissions staff, I just want to let you know that my favorite thing about Providence from a parent’s perspective is the single sex dorms. None of the other schools we looked at (and we looked at alot!) had them exclusively.

I liked the single sex dorms, too. I also liked, when we visited them, Loyola MD’s visiting policy in the dorms—having to sign in & out, no overnights by opposite sex, even single sex overnights having to be approved by the roommate—all geared towards avoiding the “tyranny of the roommate” with which many of us are so familiar! And safety concerns (sorry, I can’t remember Providence’s but I assume it is similar).

I figured—if young people really want to get together for s-x, if they are smart enough to get into these schools, they are smart enough to find a way—meanwhile the roommates are entitled to sleep in the room their parents are paying for, and not be subjected to carrying-on in the other bed.

Keep the single sex dorms!

Alf Tupper… thanks for the input it is very useful (interesting take on the literary character). It is a very diffucult process for some of us to weigh acceptances, scholarships, and desires. I wish I had a crystal ball.

I like the idea of single sex dorm too, just heard a story where freshman female roommate had sex w/ boyfriend while her roommate was present (pretending to be sleeping-- she didn’t know what to do but was grossed out). eeeewwww…
