My son was suspended for a year for having sex with a 17 year old student. The act was consensual, but the University has a zero tolerance code. I’m afraid this will follow him his entire life. I wonder if another university would accept him now during this year period. He is not interested in returning to the school that suspended him and I don’t blame him. They did not handle the event fairly.
Don’t be banging 17 year olds!
Was this in a state where the age of consent is 18? There are several states where that is the case. If nothing else, this is a good reminder to parents to discuss the age of consent in the state where your kid is going to school (male or female) – heck, even in your home state.
Your feeling that it was unfair does nothing to change the reason he was dismissed. If he wasn’t convicted of a criminal offense or required to register as a sex offender, at least he won’t have that following him around.
He could try to apply to other schools. He will have to reveal his reason for dismissal, I am sure. Other options would be to finish an AA degree at a local community college, then apply to your state flagship or another public university in your state. He still might need to disclose, but I’d think he’d be more likely to get in, especially if his grades are good.

You said it was against the university’s code. Must be a religious school.
