@EAB426 do you have a good school counselor? I would definitely go the the counselor with this if it is a first choice. I know my son’s counselor would then call and reach out to the admissions officer and relay the student’s interest. Ask the guidance counselor what the best course of action (if any) is at this point. I hate deferrals! Leaves us with knots in our stomach for our kids! Also, quick question though - what program did your S apply for? Is it a competitive program? If so, would he be willing to consider a different school within the University? Sometimes that actual program is the hinderance and not so much the general acceptance to the University. Figured I would throw that out there
@xaviermom2017 thank you so much for your advice and support. I really appreciate it! Before reading your latest comment, I did have my son send a very short email letting admissions know his mid term progress report has been sent, he was disappointed in hearing he was deferred but appreciate he was still being considered in RD, that UNH has been a top choice since visiting and that he looks forward to the challenge, possibly studying abroad and being part of the UNH community. Very short and sweet, I didn’t have him comment on his grades or any other volunteer service and extra curriculars as the letter stated not to send any additional info. He finished off by thanking them and looking forward to a decision. At this point, I’ll leave it at that and see what happens.
He applied for the wildlife conservation biology program and hopes to minor in justice studies. I’ve done a bit of research and haven’t found it’s a competitive major. We had a scheduled accepted students visit at Roger Williams tomorrow, but looks like we are getting another foot of snow so I’m going to have to reschedule. This whole process keeps dragging on! A few more months to go and we’ll be out of the woods!
@EAB426 I think you made a great choice having your son write the email to admissions! It shows continued interest if nothing else. Sounds as though you have done everything right! Hang in there! It is definitely a trying process - on the parents lolol. The weather is not cooperating. We are supposed to be heading to UVM on Thursday. I’m wondering how much snow I’m facing there!!! If my son commits to UNH, he too will be involved in the Justice Studies dual major!! Perhaps they will run into each other!! Stay safe in the weather! Keep us posted
@xaviermom2017, still waiting! He did get a response to his email from admissions which was nice. I wasn’t expecting a reply. They acknowledged his continued interest and they would be reviewing his application again early March and a decision should follow soon after. We are still waiting on URI as well, his portal there changed saying thanks for his patience while they review all applications and a decision should come in March. I haven’t heard of anyone getting that message so I have a sinking feeling he’s been placed at the end of the line so they too can review mid year grades. Also waiting on UMASS, but that is a big reach and honestly is not in any of our conversations because we are both doubtful he’ll be accepted. We had to postpone visit to RWU due to a storm, so that visit will be in April now, New Haven is in March and he’s eliminated Unity in Maine.
@EAB426 Glad you updated!! I’m sure the end results will be good! The waiting won’t be much longer! March 1 is around the corner As for the reach school, I hear you. My S did not get into his #1 reach - UMaryland It was disappointing but I guess expected, so he got over it quickly. Still waiting on a few more reaches. We were just shocked with an admission to Virginia Tech which was a reach! Going to visit! I think its important to see all of the accepted schools so there are no regrets. They really do all have some great things to offer. I’m quite impressed so far!
If you need any information about New Haven or if you would like some student feedback, I am happy to reach out! Just inbox me. I’m on campus there quite frequently and I know many of the students, including freshman. I’m not sure which program your son is interested in but I’m happy to talk to you more about it!
Again, best of luck with everything!
@xaviermom2017, Thank you! I will inbox you in the next few days with some questions. I really appreciate it!!
Got into VA Tech? Your son seriously needs to consider that. My Step Dad went to VA Tech. Tremendous school. Strong community. Strong network. Tough to turn down VA Tech unless he has a seriously better option. UNH is not it.
@CTDodger thanks for the input, yes, he was accepted the other day in first rounds and you are not the first person to encourage VT and I get it! The programs are fabulous, the campus looks amazing, etc. It was definitely at the top of his list. He just didn’t think he would get in because his SATs came in low which really shocked us coming from the academic environment within which he has attended high school. In any event, the only issue to consider is the 9 hour trip. Definitely won’t allow for a weekend home here and there. We have to visit and see how he feels about the campus. We held off on visiting before because he didn’t want to get hung up on the school as a top choice, knowing it was a reach. He is waiting to hear from a few more including Penn State, USC and NCS. In the meantime we have been visiting and weighing his acceptances which include UNH, UVM, Providence, Loyola, St. Johns, Marist, and UTK. I’m happy to consider all opinions. We are learning as we go along.
I had hoped my son would have been VA Tech material, but to be honest, I didn’t feel he had the necessary dedication to justify sending him to many of the schools on his list. I just couldn’t justify the cost given his track record. I don’t expect we will get any Need money and he wouldn’t get any Merit so I am assuming we have to pay full price.
As for the 5 hour drive… You must live closer to VA than I do. Here in CT we are probably 7-8 hours away from where my mom lives in Northern Virginia. Which is too far to go for a 2 day weekend. However, our daughter attends McGill in Montreal which is about a 5 hour drive from us. And we’ve gone up there just about one weekend per semester. And she has taken the bus down about the same rate. It’s doable. Now, at McGill, all classes are video-taped so if you are unable to attend you can view the class online. So she often extends a day or two and watches the classes while on the bus back and forth.
@xaviermom2017 portal finally updated this morning to admit to alternate major!!! He didn’t get into the Wildlife and Conservation Biology program, he’s been admitted as undeclared in the liberal arts college. This certainly has been a long wait and a game changer for him! He’s at school so we haven’t spoken yet, but he’s already text me and said he’s withdrawing his applications from New Haven and RWU, so I’m assuming he’s not too disappointed in the change of major. UNH was his top choice from the beginning, but he also said he wants to wait for URI decision. Thank you so much for your support, I’m so relieved he was accepted to his top choice! We will hopefully have a decision from URI within the next week or so and it will come down to those two.
@EAB426 I’m so excited for you both! Fabulous!!! We are actually attending a student admit of COLA on March 24th!! Would be great to meet you if you and your son attend! He must be thrilled! Starting off in a different major is no worry! I’m sure it’s an easy transfer next year! Just make sure he works closely with his advisor to get him on the right track for a change of major!! Congratulations!!!
@xaviermom2017, can you share your experience with University of New Haven? My daughter got accepted into their forensic science program. I haven’t really read any good things about New Haven… I understand their forensic science program is accredited and is strong, but what about overall college student body? She got into Penn State as well, but not the main campus. Doing forensic science as 2+2 program. thanks.
