Swimmer Athlete Chance my Daughter - Dartmouth, others

D24 is definitely not fast enough a swimmer to achieve swimcloud single digit power index performance, but she’s squarely in 20s and aiming to achieve 10s which would seem to be a definitive achievement for a D3 swimmer. one good almost simplify it even further to achieve a 100m free in ~57sec

To jump from a power ranking in the 20s to 10s in one season would be very hard to do. There is just not that much movement on the Swimcloud rankings, especially for girls since they are done growing.

it is difficult, except her group was locked out of training for an extended period for covid, and she’s not done in terms of muscular growth. but you’re right that is definitely a substantial challenge to reach the 10s. realistically, target schools will be 20s focused

Would add Williams to the list since Williams is often an overlap with Dartmouth.

Thanks for the suggestion, she’s reworked her list slightly to focus on ivies/D3 where she qualifies academically (3.95) and with her swimcloud power index 20s)

Dartmouth + John Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Brown, Chicago, Williams, Swarthmore, Tufts, Wesleyan, Amherst, Colby, Toronto, McGill + (non swim) Barnard, Stanford

I think she will get interest from a few of those - Colby, Wesleyan, Swarthmore.

A 1500+ SAT will help pique the interest of JHU coach. He will not support without.

JHU:p

  • do coaches request SATs even though JHU itself is TO?
  • is SAT 1500+ a nice to have (about midway in their published range), or a hard rule for athletes at JHU

Wesleyan:
the only concern is there has been a number of posts on the school not extending LL/admission after having given full coach support/pre read

I’d cross that Wesleyan bridge if the coach is interested and your D is feeling like it’s a top choice. Then you can ask what support can mean for you and dig in to how those stories are similar to or different from your situation. You may become privy to information you currently don’t have.

I would not take it out of the running preemptively.

you’re absolutely right that were still early in that process which is pushing up speed, and it remains a numbers game to maximize chance of having several coaches who like her to the point of wanting to recruit her. only if she reaches that point, will she be able to start thinking about real choices

This list is a good starting point, just know that the non-Ivies and non-NESCACs on this list may have different timelines, policies, and processes than we have been talking about on this thread. For example, JHU, CMU, Chicago, Swat don’t have the pre-read timing rules of Ivy/NESCACs. CMU and Chicago coaches tend to not carry as much weight in the admissions decision as Ivy/NESCAC, but do send some LLs to athletes (but not to all AFAIK).

Just make sure your D is asking questions about the process, and ultimately where she stands in the process.

If she does receive an ‘offer’, she needs to understand exactly what is being offered, she wants to hear ‘full support through the admissions process’.

Once she knows the level of support being offered, she should ask ‘what proportion of past recruits who have received this same level of support were accepted’.

The idea is to have as full information as possible before making a verbal commitment, knowing one will never have complete information. There is always risk, as coaches can not make admission offers.

consistent for all is the process of engagement with the coach from emails, text, phone, zoom and ultimately OVs. we start with a slightly larger group, which slowly downsized with time, and hopefully leads to full support/LLs.

luckily, D24 is able to contact a few athletes directly to get a feel for how it works differently at some of the target schools, but ultimately the coach will have the most accurate vibe

Swim coach requires it to give full support. I am sure it varies by sport, but we know a tennis player who was told she needed to cross that mark, applied with a 1490 and ultimately did not get in. Landed at UChigago ED2.

Thanks for the color, she is also checking with her friend who ED’d and competes for JHU

bottom line, she also registered for SAT to nail 1500+

They will super score, and if I remember correct she was already close? Plenty of time to get there.
