Swimming Prep

To prepare for Swab Summer as well as the Swimming requirements of the Academy what strokes should a incoming Mid practice and be prepared to show some competency in?

Crawl? Breaststroke? Sidestroke? etc???

Most swimming done at the academy and in the navy is done using the sidestroke or a variation of the sidestroke called the CSS(combat swimmer stroke). I would also learn the crawlstroke though, just because its so standard.

How long are the swims anyway? Do you guys do a lot of swimming?

This link to USNA PE department is a bit old but at least you can see what the curriculum has been. (AY 2003-2004)

For the Class of 2010, they have had Boxing, Wrestling and Swimming. All three classes can be validated at the start of each course. I do not know what is involved with validating Wrestling or Boxing as he took both courses. Validating swimming is via a 200 swim in under a specific time. I seem to recall he stating that is was short course - 200 yards in under 3:30.

Oh easy enough lol. I wish I could do the runs as easy as I could do the swims lol.

Do not worry about swimming as much as running and strength. You will do very little swimming compared to those other exercises. Learning to tread water well, without using you hands too, will greatly benefit you.

My son validated wrestling and swimming. He wrestled in hs but only did a bit of swimming a month or two before I day to mix up some PT. Plebe swimming is pretty basis so if you can swim, you can validate. Later swim classes are more intense. If you do Plebe summer boxing, you'll validate academic year boxing. The more you validate, the better off you'll be. I think the 200 yard (meter?) time sounds correct. To validate wrestling, you had to wrestle a match and prove you knew the basics. If you don't validate any PE, you'll still be fine...just enjoy PE, it isn't that bad and good break from academics.

Thanks for the info, my son just wanted to make sure he had some understanding of what was expected and if possible validate out of some activities. He's working on his swimming, strokes etc. really as a part of his overall conditioning without the impact of running. He's back in track now, running 5 days a week, 4-5 miles a day, plus sprints etc and ran cross country in the fall so that side of the equation is covered. No experience in wrestling so I assume he's in that through the summer, Boxing is a possibility, he's a brown belt in Shotokan Karate and they use a lot of hand combinations, either way I'm sure he'll enjoy that challenge. Thanks again for the insight.
