I applied undeclared (which I think goes under Arts and Sciences), but now I’m really thinking about doing Business. I heard the CSOM is an amazing undergraduate program (and Business school overall). If I get accepted to Boston College, how easy/difficult is it to switch into the undergraduate Business Program?

We were at the Acceptance Day over the weekend. My son was accepted to CSOM and we were at one of the sessions. When that question was asked, we were told that it is VERY hard to transfer in…maybe 7 or 8 a year…total. But, it did seem like you could take classes there with the approval of either the dean or professor…can’t remember which. There is also a thread on CC about someone in the Arts and Sciences majoring in economics…something you might want to look into. Good luck.

Yes, it is very difficult to switch into CSOM from A&S, they make it very difficult. If you are not accepted, you are allowed to take a certain number of classes in the business school, but you wouldn’t technically be in CSOM.

Hi BCHopefully,

I remember this question coming up before …here is the link to a discussion which you might find helpful. Good luck!

Why don’t you make the switch now, before final decisions are made?

To begin, you are accepted into your college, not the overall university. This is not to say that you are prohibited from taking cross-school classes. In fact, non-Carroll School students can take 5-6 CSOM classes. Rather, you are locked into receiving your primary degree from those offered in your school. For example, you cannot be in A&S and decide to double-major in nursing.

Switching into Carroll is extremely difficult, yes. People do, however, transfer in. As referenced in Kelly’s link, show extraordinary enthusiasm, perform well, and get to know Carroll professors if you want to enter. Note, also, that transferring into Carroll after your sophomore year is outrightly forbidden, so apply for transfer EARLY.
