hi everyone,
i’m new to the forum, but have browsed the forum for quite some time to try and see which university is ideal for me.
In the end, I decided to attend BC. I was accepted as part of the Arts and Sciences, but how difficult is it to transfer to other departments, such as the Carroll School of Management? I’m unsure whether i want to do pre-med or business. Do you have to wait a year or two because you are eligible to transfer?
Your help will be greatly appreciated

It is quite difficult to transfer into CSOM because the school is near its wanted maximum of students. You'll need to really impress the deans in CSOM and maintain a high GPA (probably around a 3.8+).

i went to an info session at BC yesterday and they said that chances of transferring from arts and sciences to any of the other schools is slim to none, mainly because at these schools they start the pre-professional currciulum beginning freshman year.

^^That's not entirely true. I go to BC, and my roommate transferred from A&S to CSOM (management) last year.

As a freshman in management, you are only REQUIRED to take ONE management course. Thus, those who transfer to begin sophomore year are only one course behind. BC has the core curriculum, which means that students in all four of the undergraduate divisions are required to take a variety of classes in disciplines such as natural sciences, history, philosophy, theology, writing, math, etc. Because of this, a large number of students just spend their freshman year completing core requirements anyway.

That being said, it IS still competitive to transfer from A&S to CSOM. One thing I recommend is contacting the admissions office and request to switch NOW (before your freshman year even begins). If you don't like CSOM, it is easy to switch out. If they don't let you...well, it didn't hurt to ask. And if you're still convinced that CSOM is right for you, keep your grades up first semester and then apply to transfer. If you DO apply to transfer and DON'T get in, you can always major in math, econ, or something like that... good luck!

Hey I attended the info session yesterday as well :-) and they did say that. It never hurts to try to transfer into CSOM.

I don't know why so many students want CSOM that badly. I know, our finance department is wicktastically awesome, but I have friends who majored in History and Poli Science who are working in I-banking and consulting. They just studied what they loved, got some ridiculously high GPA, and then supplemented that with internships. You don't have to go to CSOM to get a job afterward.
