My daughter is a junior and is leaning towards either psychology (more interested in psychology with science like brain research, autism) or human development. I have heard that if she goes to a UC or CS it is hard to change major. Some of the schools she is looking at psychology is a BA and others it is a BS. Any suggestions to know if it is going to be an issue switching? I have heard Ca colleges are super impacted so can’t switch. Wondering if it would be easier out of state?
Any thoughts?
Cal states admit by major so depending upon how impacted her target majors may be, then changing majors could be difficult. You would need to look up change of major criteria for every school of interest.
For the UC’s, Psychology is found in the College of Letters and Sciences which does not admit by major so changing majors within the college is fairly easy. Changing majors between colleges could require the completion of major specific course and GPA requirements.
Every school is a little different but, at most CA colleges and for most majors, switching majors is pretty easy and most students do it more than once. For the more competitive majors they have a set of courses she’d need to take and a GPA she’d need to maintain to begin taking the upper division courses. For a few programs like nursing, it is really competitive (like straight As) but, for most it’s not that high.
As far as the BS vs BA - they are equivalent
