I was accepted into the College of Natural Sciences for the Human Development and Family Sciences major, and I was wondering how easy it would be to change to a Biology major. I’m hoping it’s a lot easier since its in the same college but idk!
As long as your grades are ok it should be straight forward, especially since you will have taken most of the same prerequisites.
Does anyone know if I could switch before the 1st semester started? Like at orientation? I already changed my major (from LAC to CNS) when I applied so I’m not too eager to change it again so soon lol
@ubetta17 , Congrats on your acceptance. I am interested in knowing more about the HDFS major. I believe it’s the right major for my DD, based on what I read about the curriculum. But, since it’s in CNS I’m concerned her grades may not be strong enough. Could you share GPA/Rank/SAT or ACT scores please? And what are your thoughts. How difficult do you think it is to get this major? I don’t see a major in COLA (presumably easier for acceptance) that is similar to HDFS.
@TXDad56 Hi!
So for me, I’m really interested in how early development affects our relationships and general mindset, and HDFS also seems like a great balance between the Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences, which are areas that I’m both interested in. It also seems like a great major if you’re interested in pre-med. To be honest I’ve only ever heard of one other person who applied for this major and got in, so it seems like its not as commonly picked compared to Biology or Biochemistry. I think it’s definitely not as competitive compared to some other majors in the CNS.
My stats are:
GPA: 3.07
ACT: 35
Rank: School doesn’t rank
EC’s:
Eagle Scout
3 year varsity football player
4 years of photography, I’ve won awards at the state and national level
Science bowl captain for three years
I’ve volunteered 60 hours feeding the homeless
Spent the summer of 2016 working as an office assistant
4 years of MUN
Essays: 8/10
Teacher recs: 8/10
I was definitely a holistic review admit, as I made up for my low GPA with my test scores, EC’s and Recs. I also think I was saved by the fact that my school doesnt rank.
@ubetta17 , still a very impressive resume. Did you take AP classes or any Honors? That is what I’m most concerned about with my DD. She has a 3.7X GPA, but no APs or Honors classes. I think she will be very lucky to achieve a 30 ACT and she needs more depth in her EC’s. She has years of sports and leadership. Her focus looks to be child development and counseling and maybe later into Psychiatry. Glad to hear that HDFS is less competitive than most majors in CNS. Was there anything in COLA that you looked at as being a fallback or a different route?
I did take honors/AP classes for every science course i took 9-12 of HS, and two different sciences my senior year. however i dont think its a too big of a setback if she didnt take AP as long as she did well in the classes. the only other APs i took were AP histories, as my school does not offer many AP classes. I originally applied as a Psych major in COLA, but submitted an appeal to change to HDFS because i knew i wanted to be in the CNS. I think she has a good shot, but admissions are so subjective and fickle. I hope it works out!
