Is it difficult to switch your major at Davis? If you knew, at the beginning of Freshman year, that you wanted to change your major, would it still take 5+ years like at some UC’s.

Please let me know,
Thanks

No, it’s easy. Just get a major change petition form from your major’s advising center or from the dean’s office, get the required signatures, and you’re geared up to go. Note that you can’t change your major during your first (fall) quarter–you have to wait until winter quarter. And if you know you want to change your major, you don’t have to waste time taking classes for the major you got accepted into–you can just sign up for classes that are geared towards your major (although if you are switching from one science major to another, well, the lower division requirements are the same for practically all science majors anyway). Of course, the ONLY exception to this is if you want to switch into the College of Engineering–to switch into any engineering major, you need to pass MAT 21ABC, PHY 9A, and BIS 2C, all with a C or better, and you have to maintain a 2.0 or better GPA.

Also, many courses at UCD can fulfill several GE requirements as well as your major requirements.

There’s also a few exceptions for super impacted majors such as Psychology and Communications, but as soon as you have the prerequisite courses you can switch without an issue (as with engineering). In all other cases what sopranokitty said is completely true.

As another note, depending on what major you want to switch to the classes may be restricted to certain (already declared by that pass time) majors during pass 1. In that case, you’ll have to wait until pass 2 to register. Many majors aren’t like this however, and you can see which classes have that restriction when you look up classes on the class search tool (<a href=“Office of the University Registrar (OUR)”>https://registrar.ucdavis.edu/courses/search/index.cfm). Classes for fall quarter aren’t up yet (won’t be for a few weeks…), but once they are you can check.

You mention that switching to Psychology would be an exception. What would happen in that case?
