Switching Majors

I'm a freshman admitted to environmental design. I want to switch majors is that easy to do when I get to school???

As long as you're not planning to switch into the College of Engineering, it should be simply a matter of filling out forms.

What if you want to transfer to Engineering?

Then you'd better have an impeccable GPA

By impeccable GPA, I believe the poster above me means an impeccable college GPA in engineering prerequisites (Math, Physics, Chem & etc.)

I assume you want to switch to a major within L&S, as the College of Environmental Design, which you are in, doesn't have a lot of majors.

If that is the case, then consider the following, especially the last sentence:

*You will be considered for change of college only if (not counting college credit you earned while still in high school) you:

* Have completed at least one semester of coursework at UC Berkeley
* Have completed fewer than 90 units at the end of your last term before admission to the College
* Are able to complete your degree within the College's unit limit
* Have completed Entry Level Writing and the first half of the Reading and Composition requirement (by the end of your freshman year)
* Have also completed the second half of the Reading and Composition requirement (by the end of your sophomore year)
* Are eligible to declare a major (if you have completed 60 units or more)

Please note: Grade Point Average is also a significant consideration for admission to the College. Students who meet all other criteria and have a 3.0 or higher GPA are more likely to be approved. *

Change of College

sakky, I assume units refers to college credit hours? So would that mean I would have to have 60 hours before I can switch. With at least one of those semesters being at Berkeley? Just want to make sure I am understanding this correctly

No, it means that if you have already completed 60 units at Berkeley and then wanted to switch to L&S, then you would have to be eligible to declare a major (and hence have to conform to the corresponding rules regarding that).

But if you have not completed 60 units at Berkeley, then that rule does not apply.

The requirement is quite clear about that:

* * Have completed at least one semester of coursework at UC Berkeley *

And to emphasize again, the switching process is not automatic. L&S will decide whether to take you, and that decision is contingent on a number of things, notably your GPA. If you don't do well in your time in the CED, you may find that L&S won't approve your switch.

* Please note: Grade Point Average is also a significant consideration for admission to the College. Students who meet all other criteria and have a 3.0 or higher GPA are more likely to be approved. *
