Switching Majors

I'm new to the forums, this place seems really helpful. I was accepted into Binghamton for Computer Science, and I'm interested in switching into the Business school for Management Information Systems. Do I have a better chance of getting into the business school now that I have been accepted to the University in general? I didn't think I would be able to get into the business school with a 3.56 and 1240/1600 even with all honors classes from a magnet school, 3 years of Varsity Tennis, IT internship on wall st, and my own computer repair business. Can somebody help me?

Hi. I was admitted for Computer Science, and switched to Computer Engineering. Both are in their Thomas J. Watson School. It is fairly easy to switch majors WITHIN the SAME school, even before starting.

It will be virtually impossible to switch into School of Management at this point. They make a point in stating that if you want SOM, apply SOM -- don't try to transfer yourself in. It's almost impossible. Should you attend Binghamton, you would have the opportunity to try to transfer into SOM from Watson, but that will require VERY high grades. They start accepting from 4.0 applicants and work their way down, often stopping at 3.7. They claim there is no "cutoff", but because of the nature of how competitive SOM is, there really is a cutoff.

Best of Luck!

I still think I made the right call, I don't think I would have gotten into the SOM.

Well, just be sure you are willing to major in Computer Science or something else asides from business. A lot of people do what you did, but then they find out they still can't get into SOM. It would most likely be much easier for you to transfer into Harpur - their liberal arts school.

Some people will only go to Binghamton if they get into SOM at some point, so it's a gamble.

I know for a fact that I want to major in something that has to do with computers, I'm just more interested in the business relationship to computers. If I was rejected from Binghamton, my college choices would be severely different. When would be my best chance to switch?

Best time to apply is during the fourth semester for the beginning of the junior year. Priority is given to candidates who are enrolled in the
second semester of the sophomore year. Freshmen are rarely accepted into the double degree program or granted internal transfer.
