Need some help here. I recently got accepted into Bing but they've accepted me in the Harpur school since I put my major was undeclared when I applied. Thing is, a majority of my credits are business oriented and I want a business major in SOM. Is it possible to switch over to SOM as a new transfer instead of being shoehorned into Harpur?

From what I understand, you are going to have to stick it out through Harpur and apply as an intra-university transfer for the Spring 2013 semester if you choose to attend Binghamton. If you’re an external transfer, you could also stay another semester at your current institution and apply for admission to SOM for the Spring 2013 semester which I have heard is easier.

Thanks for the reply Arthos.

The problem is though, I never had a chance to apply to SOM. It was just a direct application to Binghamton in general, how could I even apply to SOM when the option was never given? I applied via the SUNY application btw. Seems a bit unfair to me imo.

Also, would I lose more credits if I intra-applied? I’m overstaying my community college really bad right now (74 credits) and something needs to be done.

You’re welcome! I believe that when you select your major as something administered through the School of Management then you are basically applying to that school. For example if you were to have selected Computer Science as your major, you would have then been applying to Binghamton’s Watson School of Engineering. As far as I know, they wouldn’t destroy those credits if you were an intra-university transfer.

Well that’s ********, they should’ve put a disclaimer that undeclared automatically meant Harpur instead of ruining my academic future like this. Is there anyway to have them change harpur to som? Or somehow reapply and choose my major? When I tried to reapply online, the form said I couldn’t since I’ve already applied to Binghamton.

So unjustified…

You can’t just tell them to switch your major, you’d have to do an intra university transfer.

Proverbial,

Is it Bings fault you chose an “undecided” major? If you were already a business najor why didn’t you select that on your transfer app?

Well I did the same thing as well, I originally applied through SOM and switched to undecided because it is easier to get into Harpur than SOM.

Sophie,

Didn’t you make this change after a decision by SOM?

When you apply as undecided, you are put into Harper. That’s the way it works. You can transfer, and you can get the courses you need not to lose time as well. I know a number of kids who did this. You have a better chance of acceptance through Harper which is why they took that route.

I was deferred from early action as an incoming freshman, and I decided afterwards to switch to harpur undecided. I was actually denied from harpur, and offered a chance to be reviewed for the human development major at the college of community and public affairs, and that’s how I got accepted.
