I'm a prospective NU applicant for Regular Decision. I will be applying to Weinberg if I get rejected or deferred from Brown (ED). I am particularly interested in Cognitive Science but I may choose to pursue a career in Biomedical Engineering. Will Northwestern allow me to switch from Weinberg to McCormick if I want to?

Hey, I have the same problem. See, I’ve been to this info session and the alums there told me that it is EXTREMELY easy for one to change his or her school in NU. She told me that the student may just right out a form at the Dean’s office, hand it in, and wait for the admin to change your school.

BUT

This doesn’t kinda make sense because obviously competition for each undergraduate school is different from those of others… At this point, I do not have much concrete info regarding that, but what I can tell you is that the alums told me that changing schools was fairly easy at NU…

Its pretty easy to switch schools with a few caveats. Into the School of Music is quite hard (also probably people wanting to do this are quite rare). Into Journalism is somewhat hard, as it depends on space – so # of people transferring out/class size, etc.

It actually is pretty easy to transfer into McCormick, the only hard part is that because engineering is such a tracked major you need to decide pretty early if you want to switch. You need classes in a specific sequence with specific prerequisites , including classes like EA/EDC which freshmen take that are mccormick only. I’ve known people who switched after freshman year, but they may or may not have had to stay beyond 4 years (I forget).
