Switching Schools??

hey - I was accepted ED into the WCAS as a phsyics major, but I think I wanna switch to Materials Science and Engineering, which will require me to switch schools, but I'm afraid if I do that, then they'll think I was just saying I was gonna be in WCAS because it's easier to get into than McCormick, and once I got in, I would switch. Does anyone know how hard it is to switch schools and do they let you switch if you request it, or do they actually have to review your application again? I donno, maybe I'm just freaking out (typical of kids on this board...)

maybe one of u freshmen or sophomores at nu could help me out ;)

Hey frosh - Last year I applied to WCAS and was accepted (RD), and then decided I wanted to transfer into Medill (journalism). I emailed the dean of the school I wanted to transfer into, and he handled it from there - no one said anything about it being easier to get into Weinberg. That's what I'd do if I were you, and I'd do it sooner rather than later, because the longer you wait, the harder it is to change schools. Good luck!

thanx a bunch!!!

McCormick is only 30% female so if they think there is a chance you can do the work I'm sure they'll let you transfer. I'd be easier on your schedule to start in engineering and switch out than start somewhere else and transfer in.

whats WCAS?

Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences

well, i donno if i want to or not... i know that WCAS has a core curriculum that students have to take, and i dont think mccormick does, so if i start out in mccormick and then switch later, i might be behind on a few classes, but i guess either way i could get behind... maybe i should just figure out what i wanna do and stick to it :) lol

Engineering schools have tighter course requirements with far fewer electives outside engineering...easier to go from engineering to arts and sciences than from arts and sciences to engineering....nice thing about an ED acceptance is you have a looonnnggg time before you have to decide and register...

It would be a difficult situation if you transfer into engineering after school starts since everyone, if I am not mistaken (Engineering First first started when I was already a junior so I didn't take them), starts the 4-course sequence of "Engineering Analysis" in the fall. If you miss the first sequence, you may have to wait for another year to start it.

ya, i just check out the mccormick website, and I agree that it'll be MUCH harder to transfer into engineering after school starts... so, now all i have to do is decide which one i like better. i would really like to avoide having to switch schools once school starts...

What majors are you considering again? What is it that you like about material science? :)

i would like to either major in physics or materials science and engineering... i like physics because, well, im good at it (and math), and i like matsci because it sounds interesting, and it involves like physics, chemistry, math, and engineering... are you a student at northwestern? what are you majoring in?

I'd graduated already. I was a chemE major.

apparently mat sci @ NU is 2nd behind MIT
if that influences your decision any

hm, ya i knew it was 2nd, but i didnt know who was first :) and i think im gonna switch to the engineering school... thanx to those who gave their opinion

NU's mat sci may be 2nd to MIT but it is the oldest in the nation.

If I wanted to transfer from Weinberg to Medill School of Journalism or the Communications school, would they jsut accept me? Or would I be applying as a transfer student or what? How hard would it be?
