Switching to a 4 year school from a Community College after 1 year?

Hello all. My name is Will, and let me just start off by saying that I am extremely smart, but lacked the will to succeed in High School, for which I payed the price. I didn't have a high GPA, and I didn't get into many of the four year schools I applied to. But, I am here at Westchester Community College, and I am ready to give it my best. I know it will be hard, but I know I can do very well. Anyway, back to my question and story. I wrote a KICK A$$ essay when sending out my applications. You see, I have had to deal with a big personal problem since my Sophomore year in High School. An anxiety disorder. I wrote about that in my essay, I had it edited by about 3 english teachers and sent it along. I won't get into my personal story, but I want you to know where I am coming from; I've been through a lot.

So, I am here at WCC, and I want to switch out after one year. In fact I NEED to switch out after one year. I see WCC as my way into a 4 year school, but transferring as soon as I can.

So my question is, if I maintain a very high GPA, let's say above 3.5, do I have a good chance of transferring to the school I want to go to? Which is Marist College.

I don't want to be stuck here for two years. Now I am not saying it is a bad school and I hate the people because I don't think that at all. I just want to be in a dorm room on a great campus not far from my home. I know I have to work hard to achieve this but I can do it.

I have heard many things about transferring after one year, things ranging from "Of course you can" to "No, it is pretty much impossible''.

I am so sick of people telling me I can and cannot do something. So, what are my options? Can I switch out after one year?

Also, does anyone have any recommendations or comments? Feel free to post!!!!!

Thanks a lot peeps!

Bumpity bump!

^^^ BTW peeps, thats a term we use when a thread gets lost in the New Posts section. It’s just so it doesn’t go unread!

You should definitely apply to transfer this year–just remember that your first semester grades better be great for the adcoms to take notice. Your second sem grades won’t be available until late May/June so they may not have any influence on the decision.

Take care with your essays and recommenders, and good luck!

Cool, thanks man!

I’m in the same situation as you - my high school record is atrocious, but I really want to transfer after only a year. I love my CC, but with my boyfriend possibly going cross-country to New York for college next year I’m trying to get into a college over in that area as well. (It’s actually totally coincidence that we’re looking at schools in the same area, I didn’t know he was looking at a school in New York until I told him that I was. But it’s pushed me to try really hard to get in next year rather than in two years.)

I don’t really know anything about the school you want to go to, but I’ve been talking to a transfer admissions counselor from the school I want to go to and she says that transferring in a year is totally possible if you keep your grades up and are willing to show you can work hard. She said it’s easier if you have two years, but it’s definitely possible with only one, and there’s certainly no harm in trying!

I don’t know if they have Phi Theta Kappa at your CC, but if they do you should try to get in. From what I can tell schools like to see that and also some schools offer scholarships to people who were in it.

Good luck! I hope you’re able to get in to your dream school. :)

Hey bandnerd88, I love the name! Yeah I am really going to try to get the highest GPA I possibly can so that my high school record can be overlooked. I don’t want to be at this school for longer then I have to be, I want to be on a real campus. Hey if you have any other updates on the process, let me know!

Something that needs to be said here is that if you are applying with less than one year of work under your belt (as you will since your Spring grades won’t be available to the initial app reviewer), then your admission decision will be based more heavily on your HS record. If not more “heavily” (that’s such a strong word), then just know that they will give it weight.

So this might matter or it might not, depending on how competitive the schools that you two are looking at are.

I graduated from high school one year early and I attended cc for only one year and got into UC Irvine and UCL, and almost got into USC but I got a D in a pre-req so that didnt happen. It is possible.

Well the reason I mentioned it is because the OP stated that his/her GPA was bad. I’m guessing that this means far from an almost-USC GPA. :)

I’m looking to do the same thing… if I were to send in my second semester grades when I receive them, would they then look only at my college grades or could they reconsider if they already made a decision based on h.s and 1st semester college grades?

Idk mcl, I haven’t gotten as many posts on this thread as I though I would have. It’s ok though, I still have hope!

Your high school record will count for a bit more than if you were to transfer as a junior, and you’ll only have one semsters worth of grades to show vast improvement, but definitely go for it. Are you going to join the Honors College? Does WCC have one?

The good thing about Marist is that it’s transfer rate is significantly higher than it’s regular rate. I think it’s about 2/3rds or so? Above you said your high school record wasn’t as good as it could’ve been – and so I’d imagine you’d want to shoot for a 3.8+ to show the dedication and intellect that’s not visible when observing your high school transcript.

I don’t know the proportion of soph to junior transfers at Marist, but I would assume it’s very very possible depending of course on performance.

What you’ll want to do is –
A. Join the Honors college at your current CC if you can.
B. Buddy up to a couple of profs. Marist only requires one LOR, and you’ll want an amazing one.
C. Find out if you have to send test scores – some schools will waive them if you’ve completed a certain number of hours.

Wow, thank you so much for all of that info. So you think if I can manage a GPA over 3.5 I can get into Marist after 1 year? The Honors College here only requires a 3.25 GPA to qualify. I don’t want to be here for to long, so I hope I can get out ASAP. I can’t do two years, unless I am absolutely forced to, but I plan on changing that.

i’m glad i found this post, despite the fact that it’s 4 months later. I’m in the EXACT same position, with Marist and WCC. I’m planning on applying after finals next week and we get our grades. If you’d like some info, I suggest you meet with Dr. Roundtree, the Transfer Counselor. If you want some info, come to a transfer club meeting (im the Vice President of the club). We meet in the student center during common hour on wednesdays.

i was rejected from Marist as a freshmean, nd went to wcc. the rejection letter said to complete one yr at another school, with 30 credits and a minimum 2.8 GPA to qualify as a transfer. as long as you have courses in progress for the spring (you should be good), the credits will be satisfied. They will focus on ur college gpa , so a 3.5 first semester would be great, but you would have to keep it up. bein in Phi Theta Kapa is a big plus. so id say its very possible that you could get in
