Why do we need to write 5 essays for the school? Je n'aime pas!

Go onto common app and click the Syracuse supplement and follow the list of prompts to click. I saw it too. It is more involved than most of the other supplements to the common application. I guess they decided that if you are sincerely interested you will take the time to think about the essays and if you are on the fence, or this isn't a top choice school for you, then you won't bother. I think they are looking to weed out the latter.

A2Wolves6 did they cut out some essays. I saw the ones you listed, but for some reason when I clicked on the supplement today I only saw 2 of those essay Qs (which is enough). Am I missing something, or were we looking at the supplement maybe for last year?

The essays I see are:
What are your career and academic aspirations?
The one about 2 ideas from the Syracuse compact and how they relate to your beliefs and convictions?

My daughter is apply to the College of Visual and Performing Arts. I don't see where they want 5 essays. I am wondering if you are applying to the Communication school.

WEll, I don't know why they just don't want one essay and maybe a statement of aspirations at the most. I don't understand the need for additional essays.

Taxguy it keeps the lazy and those who want to apply as a safety away. It will encourage you to investigate whether you are sincere about attending SU before submitting an application. It will keep the # number of apps down, which is not a problem since there are more students than ever applying to college.

Northeastmom, I thought about what you said, and maybe you are right. Hoever, it still doesn't make sense. From everything that I have read, schools want MORE applications in order to both increase their numbers, increase their rejection rate and reduce the acceptance rate. In addition, more applications means more application fees. It can't cost them $40 or $50 to review an application! Thus, why try to reduce applications? The top ivy schools don't pull this stunt.

Taxguy,
I think the supplement contains 2 addtional essays : academic aspirations, and something you have not accomplished yet and what that is and how SU can help you reach that goal. It is not that bad.

Keep in mind that what you say is true, it is also true that some students with ivy or near ivy stats might look at SU as a safety. They do not want to admit you and then have you choose another school. That is other side of the issue.

By the way the app fee I believe is $60, but who's counting :)

Go to your counselor and ask for a form or more. I got 3 from my counselor that I sent in, but i'm not sure they will process the request. If you apply to lots of colleges (more than 3-4), then they may not give you the forms.
