My D is auditioning at Syracuse on Saturday, Jan. 19, in the am session. Who else from collegeconfidential will be auditioning that day? (Hey, Susan!)

My husband is from the Syracuse area, so I am familiar with weather, somewhat with getting around, etc. Rather than buying snowboots (I’m in Ala–the only snow boots here are the fashion kind :-), I was thinking either hiking boots, or waterproof tennis shoes for outdoor footwear. Thoughts from anyone? Anything else we might need to have on hand (other than the obvious)?

What are auditionees wearing for the acting/singing part? I’ve combed extensively the faq site on the big list, as well as the wardrobe portions on this site.

Actually, Syracuse has had fairly mild weather recently, so most of the snowpack is melted -- at the moment! They're forecasting cold weather for next week, though. When it does snow, they are pretty efficient about clearing roads and sidewalks.

You won't go wrong if you go for a somewhat dressy look. SU girls usually show up for departmental auditions in heels and pretty dresses. Bright colors are more common than black; but there's nothing wrong with black if that's what your D has in your wardrobe.

At my D's audition (2 years ago -- she's a sophomore now) the dance audition was first; I don't know if that's still the way it's done. I remember they were quite strict about dance attire -- no skirts or other cover-ups allowed. There will be time to change, in any case.

BreatheEasy--I just checked the weather for next week-end--definitely hiking boots, and I may look for authentic snow boots down here at the sports stores.

SingerNLmusic--break a leg! They've told us for those in the am session that we may be asked to stay later, so maybe we'll see you anyway. My D is also auditioning at Ithaca on Sunday. Will you be there?

Onstage -- I replied to your private message (thank you). I also appreciate the wardrobe guidance. We shopped yesterday--bought 4 dresses that are summery--two are bright and colorful, and two are black/white patterns (from White House/Black Market--I think ya'll have that store up there). We'll narrow it down to two dresses. We're shopping again today.

As far as shoes, we had planned on street heels. We met a woman yesterday at a store that has just come off her tour from 42nd Street, and is an NYU grad. She highly recommended wearing character shoes for the sing/act portion. My D's are tan, and it seems to me that the outfit would look better with street heels. She said that character shoes look more professional and continue the leg line better. Thoughts anyone?

For college auditions, most I saw (including my own daughter) wore street shoes with heels, not character shoes. I see character shoes more in dance auditions or sometimes for show auditions but for college auditions, street clothing and street shoes are usually worn in the singing/acting portion of the audition.

I would concur that street shoes are fine... and will look better than character shoes -- particularly if your character shoes have been worn to dance in... tan ones really start to scuff up.

My D is also auditioning on the 19th in the pm session and in the a.m. session at Ithaca on the 20th. We're just hoping for good weather with all the flying and driving to be done!

It's going to be VERY cold, so bundle up! Snow flurries are predicted. In Syracuse & Ithaca, that can mean anything from flurries to a foot of snow.
