When’s everyone auditioning? I signed up for January 19th!!

January 13th in DC. I'm so excited :D

January 18th!! Syracuse in the middle of January.......I'm already praying we don't get stuck in the middle of a blizzard or something!

Coming from Alabama Jan 19th. So, it will cold, yes?

Hey sualabama are in you in the a.m. session or the p.m. session?

Yes, sualabama -- count on cold weather in Syracuse in January! The campus is on top of a hill, so it's also usually windy.

Hi Nate - I am the mom. My D is in the afternoon session. You??

Everyone not from Western New York State: be really prepared for cold and snowy weather, including sleet. I grew up in a 'burb of Syracuse and winter is the real deal there. I don't remember ever NOT having a white Christmas. Last October, I took my D to visit SU and when we left Baltimore, it was 78-degrees and sunny. Our car windows were open. Seven hours later, we crossed the Onondaga County line and it began to pour freezing rain. This was around Oct. 20.

Yeah, i'm in the afternoon session as well!!

My D is auditioning in DC on 1/12. Too bad we will miss you by a day, freedom_fri. Are you in Maryland?

Nope, Virginia

RE: Weather - I plan to rent a car to travel between Syracuse and Ithaca. Do the roads close if it's snowy? Do the roads get "sanded" or otherwise cleared for safe driving? Our state closes if it flurries!

Upstate NY roads only close for major blizzards -- they are very good at dealing with smaller snowfalls, and roads get cleared fairly quickly. The road between Ithaca and Cortland, while not a highway, is fairly busy. From there you will get on I-81, which is very well-traveled. I would strongly suggest, however, that you make sure your rental car has all-wheel or 4-wheel drive just in case there is some bad weather while you are there. You will be much safer and more secure.

We did the auditions 2 years ago at Syracuse and Ithaca back to back on the first weekend of Dec. It did snow - biggest snow I've ever seen - huge snowflakes coming down! Thank goodness one of my CC friends who lived in NY and attended Syracuse U herself was willing to drive us around each city and between Syracuse and Ithaca. I remember that her husband was very apprehensive on the bad roads that weekend between Ithaca and Syracuse. I was SO thankful we weren't driving, being from the South. We flew into Syracuse and home from Ithaca. If we had it to do over, I'd get back to Syracuse to fly home. The only flights out of Ithaca were on prop. planes - not my choice for travel.

I've been forever grateful to this CC friend who drove us. Reach out to your CC connections! It will be the best thing you've done. She and I had met earlier that fall at a BW audition. Our kids didn't end up at either of these schools.

Thanks for all the tips! Where did your kids end up in school?
My D has only 2 years of foreign language and Syr says minimum is 3 years for academic acceptance. Does anyone know if that is a deal-breaker for acceptance into the BFA MT at Syracuse?

As you may have guessed, my D ended up at Syracuse, and is totally thrilled with the program. She did have 3 years of a language, so that was never an issue for us. I would suggest you call the theater department -- they are very helpful and can probably give you the answer to that question. Glad to help out -- you can PM me if you have any other questions.

My son got into Syracuse, but he probably met that language requirement. He was thrilled to get into Syracuse, but he is currently a very happy MT student at Elon University. These 2 programs have much in common, in my opinion. We were very impressed with the Syracuse students who worked in summerstock with my son this summer.

I am in the same boat as you. I took French I & II in 8th and 9th grade, but then I transferred schools and they didn't offer French. Rather than start I new language, I decided not to take one since I'm not a fan of foreign languages to begin with. I actually emailed Syracuse admissions about this, and they said they'd look at it in context of your school, and that there were always exceptions. So lacking in foreign language certainly won't help you, but I feel that in terms of kids applying for MT it won't make or break you.

In our school system, you can't graduate with less than 3 foreign language courses of the same language, or 2 in one and 2 in another. But it's okay, because I did 5 years of German :D

Best advice: email or call them. If it is an admission REQUIREMENT, then it might be problematic for the university, but only THEY could tell you that

Good luck!

This is what the college replied ..... Syracuse University requires 4 years each of English, math, science, and social studies and 3 years of foreign language. The Prospectus outlines typical requirements of a college preparatory program. However, we understand that some students attend high schools that do not require this number of courses since high school requirements vary by schools and states. If you have not completed all of these requirements, the Admissions Committee will consider this as an exception to our standard requirement and make a judgment based on the requirements of the secondary school, strength of curriculum, and performance in those classes. If you only have two years of a foreign language, you may still be considered for admission into the drama program.
