So, this e-mail came:
The interest in Early Decision at Syracuse has been so great we have decided to offer an Early Decision 2 option. The deadline to apply ED 2 will be January 1. By applying ED 2 you will affirm your desire to attend Syracuse University and receive notification by early February at the latest. Most RD applicants won't be notified until the second half of March.

I am not sure I understand why great interest leads to adding an ED2 option. What are the implications for the kids that applied ED1? Does it mean that pool was less attractive than hoped for?

I am very interested in knowing the answer to that as well. I was thinking that maybe they didn’t receive many ED applicants at all and wanted to up the pool of definite enrolled.

Typically schools offer an ed2 option for those cases where they are not the student’s number one choice, but they might be the student’s definite number 2 choice. So after the ED decisions come in, around the middle of December, someone who was rejected by his number one now has the option to declare Syracuse as being his current top choice. I think it’s a nice option to offer, I just don’t understand why students weren’t made aware of it from the get go.
