Syracuse going forward regardless of weather

Daughter has Syracuse on Saturday. I was going to drive up after her school tomorrow but we might go up tonight or early tomorrow to avoid the weather.

I called the school just to confirm they will go forward regarless of weather. I did not want to drive up early and then find the auditions were not going forward. Was told they don't cancel. Syracuse is at least one place where the City is used to snow.

Anyone else have Syracuse this weekend?

I wondered if you were going to get cancelled…be safe!!! Stay warm and dry and break legs to your daughter.

Good luck! Doesn’t Syracuse set records in snow totals all the time? So I guess this just another day for them!

Not sure where you’re driving from, ActingDad, but be careful! One of the worst storms we’ve ever seen was in Syracuse and people were stuck on the Thruway and on 81 for hours in their vehicles. We were fortunate that we had snow tires on our car and were able to exit the highway and spent 8 hours in a small restaurant in a tiny little town while snow fell at a 3-4 inch an hour pace. One of the meteorologists on CNN just said “If you are on the highway and you are stuck, you are putting yourself in danger”. My parents live in that area and the weather is unpredictable and can change very quickly. Be sure to have a winter safety travel kit in the car. Safe travels.

Yes - in the car, you’ll need a blanket, water, etc. No, I’m not kidding. I know you are a grown man, but remember - you will have your baby in that car with you!

Hope all goes well, tho!

Thanks all for the well wishes. We live about 55 miles straight west from Newark, NJ – about 13 miles from PA border. Route for us to Syracuse is up 81 so I think we’re a little bit away from the worst track though I have not looked lately.

I grew up in Wisconsin so I’m reasonably used to bad weather driving. Think we should be fine leaving tomorrow AM.

Good luck, you guys! We have an inch or two of snow here in Virginia this morning and everyone is freaking out. Will be thinking about you up in the real weather–be safe.

Drive safe, ActingDad!

Wishing your D Break a Legs! and PLEASE be careful Acting Dad.
You are an awesome dad to make this happen for your D and the school will appreciate your sincere interest in the school. Yes have water bottles, blankets and protein bars in your car and stay safe!

Thinking of you today, actingdad, and hoping that your drive was uneventful!

Thanks everyone. Arrived without much incident. Really nothing at all until we were about 30 miles outside of Syracuse. It is coming down a lot harder here now so glad we made the decision to leave early.

Very glad to hear it! Break legs tomorrow!

Stay warm, ActingDad, and Break a Leg to your daughter!!

Glad you made it safe and dry! Break legs tomorrow to your daughter!

Times3 “We have an inch or two of snow here in Virginia this morning and everyone is freaking out.”

Sooooo true! I am from NH, all my family lives in NH, NY, CT, NJ, MA and I went to Syracuse undergrad. This morning we had a dusting of snow in VA and the local schools were delayed for two hours… I didn’t even have to scrape or brush my car. :-)

Hope that all are keeping warm, safe, and dry!

Back safely home.

I’ll say this about Syracuse. They sure do know how to handle snow up there. Barely any snow on any of the roads by morning.

As for the audition, this was the best executed audition she’s done. Audition day began with an information session in one of the two main theaters for both parents and kids. New Dean has been there 3 years and was at Juilliard for 14. Very impressive. Lots of charm. Funny and infomative. Had several students with him and comfort level between students and Dean was obvious. Students then left to a warm up and audition. Dean then took a group of the same students and sat with the parents in another room for still more questions and answers. The combined time he spent with students and parents was close to 2.5 to 3 hours. Students than took parents on a tour. Students were all very positive.

As to the auditions themselves, there were 3 faculty doing the auditions. Students randomly assigned to 1. Faculty spent a lot of time with each student. No call backs. No switching rooms. Told about 40 offers go out for a yield of 20. Like to get a mix of boys and girls but have been as skewed as 6 boys and 14 girls. Did not quite say it this way but I read him to say they’d like a mix but they won’t pass up quite a bit more talented girls just to take a boy and keep the mix equal. My daughter had a good experience at the audition. Lots of playing with pieces.

Some other impressions since there is very little about Syracuse on CC. Dean argued 3 main selling points – long history and recognized top program, top national university and collaboration with Syracuse professional theater. Kids seemed much more integrated into university than I’ve seen at some programs. Lots of references to outside of drama connections and not just we only hang out with the drama kids. Have an interesting program spring semester of senior year where kids take classes in NYC and get set up for post career. Good opportunities for an acting kid to participate in MT activities. Can audition for productions and take dance/vocal classes. Freshman not eligible for productions.

Glad we took advantage of doing this on campus because don’t know if she would have had the same view had she done them at unifieds.

thanks for lots of good information. My S auditioned at unified auditions. He loved the school and its his first choice. Hoping and praying for an acceptance and then hoping and praying we can pay the large ticket price.
