Hi! I really want to go to the Newhouse School at Syracuse University. My grades dropped a lot last year (Junior year) because I had loads of extra circulars going on and I was not able to manage my time well...
However, I do have a lot of EC because I play the violin.

Do you think that I have any chance in getting into the Newhouse, considering it is very very competitive?

And do you recommend Early Decision or should I get my grades up at the beginning of senior year and then apply Regular Decision?

If it’s really your first choice, do ED. Syracuse is used to many people applying and not going due to its location. You can always send in your first quarter grades. And make sure you visit. They need to see that you are serious.

What about your journalism ECs? Are you on newspaper? Yearbook? Have you been to journalism programs? Do you work with your local newspaper?

I had a 3.45 and a 1920 SAT…that’s on the much lower end for Newhouse. I got in, though I was put on wait list RD (but I got off on May 1, soooo there.) That said, I was on newspaper, yearbook, magazine (which I converted into an online version) in addition to NHS, student council, tour guiding for the MA state house, and other volunteering events.

It’s possible to get in, but definitely show interest and put effort into the supplement. Also, try to contact professors in Newhouse and ask a few questions to get a better idea of Newhouse and to show interest to admissions.
