Syracuse or American U?

I've wanted to go to Syracuse since my freshman year of high school to study Journalism at Newhouse. I finally get in but I don't know if I should go because American University gave me 100% in aid and Syracuse gave me about 84%. Is Syracuse worth taking out at least $10k in private loans for just my first year? Also, I know myself and I'm not likely to transfer (plus transfer students don't receive as much aid).

So I guess my question is, is it worth it and what does Syracuse/Newhouse have to offer me that American can't?

Please & thanks in advance!

I would go with AU since they gave you 100% aid unless you really didn’t like the school because it is a pretty good university

Syracuse has a better journalism school and reputation I believe. I think American is a great school but I think Syracuse is a better fit for me. I just don’t know if taking out loans is worth it…

Can someone list the pros and cons of attending SU? What are the professors like? How are each school’s rated based on the general atmosphere and student involvement?

Go to American! 10k in private loans is just not worth it, especially if you got a full ride as an option. Yeah Newhouse has a much better reputation but I mean American also has a good reputation as a school and it’s in D.C. so you’ll actually be where news happens.

I decided on Syracuse! The campus and Newhouse won me over. I hope its worth it!

Totally worth going to SU. You will make up for that loan and pay it off sooner with the connections you’ll make through SU. I’ve known two kids who went to American and hated it. They transferred to other schools. Aren’t they better known for their political science department? nice campus though… seems O.K.

Why did your two friends hate it? I never visited but I wasn’t impressed with the campus on the virtual tour. I would have loved the opportunity of living in DC, but Syracuse had so much more to offer me! They are known for their journalism department being more politically charged since they are located in DC, but they also offer other tracks for j-students.

Thanks for the input guys! I’m really happy with my decision.
