Syracuse or NYU???

Hey guys! My name is Fazeel and sadly, its that time of the year for seniors again :(( THE DREADED COLLEGE APP SEASON!!!

Anyways, I have a dilemma/question, and I really need help! A few months back, I heard about Syracuse University, and ever since I saw pictures of SU online and read more about it, I fell in love. I can see myself fitting in there, as I love to party, I love the cold, and orange may (or may not) be my favorite color, lol. The only issue I have before I apply there is the location of Syracuse, however. I'm a big city type of guy, in fact, I applied EA/ED to three colleges in NYC already, and I would've done ED to Syracuse, if only it wasn't for the location. I love every aspect of Syracuse, by everything, I mean EVERYTHING. But I'm scared that Syracuse might be too rural for me. Just to get an idea, like I said before, I applied to 3 colleges in NYC already, and that shows how much I love NYC. I love the whole urban feel, being able to walk around the streets, everything. How is Syracuse in that regard? I know that there is a huge mall around SU (Destiny USA) and its also close to downtown Syracuse, but do you think that if I go there I will be miserable? I don't want to go to a college where I know I won't be able to get that city feel that I love so much.

What do you guys think I should do? Syracuse was also giving me a lot of money (I did a net price calculator), and being realistic, I don't think I'm going to get into any of my NYC colleges except 1, and that 1 is like 20 minutes away from Manhattan (its in Queens; St. John's) so it also has a suburban feel. I am perfectly willing to apply and (if I get in) attend SU, but the only thing holding me back is the location. Can someone tell me how downtown SU is? Do you think I'll be able to fit in with this big city attitude and love? Oh, and I can't actually visit. My parents don't want to spend a lot of money to take me there, only for me to not go there. So they wanna be sure that I will go there before they take me. Therefore visiting is out the question. Someone please help me :( I don't know what to do, and I want to get all of my college apps done HOPEFULLY by Thanksgiving, so I can focus on scholarship apps then.

OH and thank you everyone for your reply!! It means a lot to me :)

SU students don’t really hang out in the city. They may go downtown once in awhile for a specific reason, but it’s not a hang out area. Plus unless you have a car, it’s not a walk you want to do. Most students hang out either on Marshall St, which is kind of part of campus, which has a lot of bars, shops and eateries or they go to Armory Square which has a ton of bars and restaurants. But Syracuse is not NYC. No place really is.

Question I have is if you applied someplace ED and are accepted, aren’t you stuck?

@TylerJL‌ thanks for the reply!!

Technically, yes, if I do get in ED I am stuck, and my ED is also one of my top choices (NYU), so if I get in I’m going to be ecstatic! Being realistic however, I doubt I will get in, and thats why I’m looking at Syracuse. So students barely go to downtown? How’s Marshall St. or Armory square like? Do you think Ill be able to fit in? I’m so stressed right now and I don’t know what to do :frowning:

Marshall at and Armory Square are a blast. Marshall St is mostly all students with plenty of hangouts. It’s the first several blocks right off campus. Armory is great fun and food. Much larger area than Marshall street but a lot of locals hang there too. I think you’d like it.

Do you go to SU? Just wondering bc if you do I’d love to ask you more questions (if that’s fine with you)! Btw thanks for all the help!! @TylerJL‌

Have applied to SU but have lives here my whole life and been on campus a zillion times.

Hey ! I’m a freshman at SU and I absolutely love it. I know how you feel because I live in Paris. It was kinda hard for me to decide which college I wanted to go to because I’m a huge city person. Even though I miss being in a huge capital, it is definitely a great place and there are tons of things to do. You won’t be bored ! The mall is amazing and there are a lot of restaurants, bars and stores. It’s the perfect college town. If you want to have the real college experience with the greek life, the athletics and all, come here ! Hope this helps and good luck !
