I have a couple of questions I would love some help with.
I am going to ED to Syracuse but money is certainly a problem. Although on paper I am above average financially, my father is extremely ill and my family simply doesn't know if they can commit so much money. I'm worried my aid package will be very low based off family income and not satisfy our needs. Does anyone have any advice for advocating or other options to gain aid?
If two people from my high school are applying ED to Syracuse, am I in direct competition with her to get in? Will this lower my chance to get in?
While you can reject an ED offer because of FA package, it’s probably better to apply to other schools RD and negotiate a better pacakge for yourself, especially as you don’t think you can pay the bill already.
Would you mind explaining what is it about Syracuse that you like? Maybe CCers can help you figure out a strategy that will satisfy your academic wants and needs with your financial wants and needs.
I am EDing because of everywhere I looked (I extensively searched out appropriate options) Syracuse was by far my favorite. Academically I fit in well and believe that with the numerous opportunities and flexibility to major - minor, I would really get a lot out of my education. In addition, they have all the extra circulars I’m looking for. Syracuse’s scores are a slight reach for me (my GPA was impacted by being placed in lower level classes then I should have been in) as well so we wanted to ED to boost my chances.
At the time of looking at Syracuse, my family thought we would be capable of paying but my father had a recurrence and now we are not sure. There is a chance it will work out we just aren’t 100% positive. If the aid is enough we will try to make it work.
So if I were to RD, I would have more room to negotiate compared to ED?
I am a international student with high stats who is thinking about applying ED to Tulane but I am afraid of the financial aid.
I can only pay 1000$ per year so is there any chance for me to be accepted with almost a full-ride scholarship (full tuition, fees, room, and board)?
OP – You would have more room to negotiate compared with ED only if you apply to several other places. Once you’re accepted at other places, then you can negotiate. Caution, however, because Syracuse is costly.
Here is what you can expect to pay ON AVERAGE at Syracuse broken down by income bracket. Remember, however, these are 2016-2017 stats and do NOT take into consideration the extra $3000 that Syracuse charged every student across the board starting last year. Add $3000 to each of these categories to see approximately how much you would pay. Also then run the net price calculator to get a tighter approximation.
If you love Syracuse, there might be other schools that fit the profile somewhat. I can try to help you find them. What sorts of things attract you to Syracuse? What programs do you like? How much can your family afford? What state do you live in? GPA and test scores?
BTW for a financial safety school you may want to consider U of Maine at Orono as it’s matching in-state tuition currently. Your approximate cost would be $15K I think – total.
