How can I increase my chances of getting Syracuse merit scholarships?
Syracuse offers the Maxwell scholarship competition for any major. This is highly selective. There is the Coronet Scholarship for a particular major (which I can’t recall). If you are in that program, you could get a full ride. Limited to that school though. Founder’s scholars receive $6000. Beyond that, there is very little merit money. Other schools offer full tuition if you score at a certain level on standardized tests, etc. You won’t find that at Syracuse.
There are actually quite a few merit scholarship options. 1870 and Coronat scholars get full rides, there are two types of 30K scholarships, a 25k scholarship as well as 15K chancellor’s, 10K dean’s, and 5K founder’s scholarships. Additionally different colleges offer their own scholarships (like whitman scholars etc…). I live in the Honors building, which is about 300 students and all of us received merit scholarships. Having great essays that show interest and creativity as well as high SATs (typically upward of 2050) and leadership positions are all ways to distinguish yourself
@abbottqc I’m trying to get the 1870 scholarship because I won’t get alout of financial aid (need based). I’m going to start calling every week (maybe once or twice) just to express my interest. My mentor said to just ask for the scholarship and see if they have any suggestions on how I can increase my chances of getting it.
Do you have any suggestions on what I can do? Syracuse is my dream school and I’ve visited twice: one tour and one overnight for the itgirls program. I want to major in business (Whitman)
My profile:
Rank 3 out 435 : 98.95 GPA
Sat: 1360/1600
President of 2 programs/clubs and team leader in the national Honor society
Because of NHS, ive been participating in a lot of community service.
I have a science research mentor and I participate in 3 outside programs for college readiness.
Also, what is Whitman scholars? Ive been trying to find more scholarships for Whitman specifically but I couldn’t find any. Can you please elaborate?
And how is the honors program like? When you were applying for Syracuse, when were you notified about it?
I think the Whitman Scholars scholarship is one of the scholarships given out by each school, for a particular major or program. For instance, my D received the Education Scholars award, (was notified with her ED acceptance) and it is dependent on her remaining in her program (so if she changes her major to another school within the university, she loses the scholarship).
As far as I know, Honors invitations go out sometime in the spring, but that’s merely gleaned from reading precious years’ threads here on CC.
Take a very close look at the trajectory of the Syracuse honors program before making a financial stretch to enroll. Last year, Admissions accidentally admitted twice as many Honors students as they were supposed to, and an infusion of money and resources to meet those students’ expectations has not been forthcoming, with a resulting increase in honors class sizes (which negates much of their purpose) and an unsurprising spike in student withdrawals. It does not seem as if supporting the honors program is a high priority for the administration.
@NkechiNicole my stats were 1410 SAT (2050 on the 2400 scale), no GPA because I’m international. Lots of extra curriculars and national and international awards, an interview and detailed essays. The honours program has been great, early registration, small classes, free trips and opportunities and a nice dorm, I got my acceptance for that with my university acceptance, but you can also apply later.
Whitman scholars is a select number of incoming freshmen who demonstrate exceptional potential for the business classes. I know quite a few of them as they also get in the honours program.
@NkechiNicole my son was just admitted to honors and as a Whitman Scholar. I’m trying to find other Whitman Scholars so I can learn more about it. What is the honors dorm like? What type of trips have you gone on? Do the honors kids participate in Greek life?
@loveagoodmovie this year the honors learning community is in Sadler hall. I remember touring it and it is very nice, if I remember there were private baths with a toilet, sink and shower. Not gender specific. They have a dining hall in the building. Very close to the dome, but can be a cold long walk to the academic buildings. Info on the Learning Communities is here:

@NkechiNicole, wondering how you made out. I hope you received the scholarship you were hoping for!
Wondering if you would mind sharing your thoughts on the It Girls Overnight program? Did you think it was beneficial? Do you remember the cost involved? The website doesn’t have the 2017 dates or application up yet. Thanks!
Does anyone know how many Distinguished Art Portfolio scholarships SU awards each year?
when are the scholarships usually awarded?
