Wondering if the acceptances come every day of the week, or just on Fridays, after 4 PM?
@acme I think it is only Fridays after 4 but there is no way to tell what admissions is planning, every year could be different.
I just found and joined this forum today. My daughter applied RD, and was invited into the Whitman Scholar program, as well as th Renee Crowne Honors program. She too received the $25,000 scholarship. Does anyone know if there’s any additional grants available? She was admitted to Binghamton as well, and has to let Binghamton know soon. Unfortunately, the $16,000/yr difference in cost is problematic. We have a college fund for her, but it’s a difference between $40,000 debt and $100,000+ debt at the end of four years. Any thoughts would be deeply appreciated. Thanks, good luck, and congrats!
@Donnamal In order to find out about potential grants you’d need to contact the financial aid office. A majority of the scholarships offered beyond the Dean, Founders, and Chancellors are for upperclassmen.
Was anyone who applied RD and a US resident notified of their acceptance?
yes, daughter applied RD and accepted 2/26
My daughter was admitted to Renee Crowne Honors program, and also Whitman School Scholar. She received $25,000 merit. Does anyone know if it’s possible to get grants in addition to merit? Even with scholarship, it’s still $16,000 more than Binghamton ( where she was also admitted). It’s painful to fathom her taking on $68,000 more in debt. The amount of debt that these students incur for a college eduction is a crime. Good luck to everyone applying, and congratulations to all who got in.
Thanks Syracuse19. She is my first child, so I’m just learning. She was accepted to Binghamton, and we thought that it was the one, based on the numbers. So when she received the SU scholarship, it stopped us in our tracks. She also got an offer from Miami Oxford, and they gave her the equivalent of the in-state tuition. I need to get this right. After all, she’ll be picking out my nursing home
@Donnamal No problem! If you have any questions–about the Honors College (I’m a part of it), about campus life, etc–I’d be more than happy to help!
@syracuse19 - you’ve been very helpful on these Syracuse threads, so thank you for that. But did I read correctly in one of your posts that you may be transferring? If so, would you mind saying why? My daughter got a great scholarship to Syracuse and also honors program but so far she is pretty lukewarm about the school. It’s mostly my fault - I went there undergrad and my experience as well was lukewarm - but absolutely nothing against the school - school was great, there were other factors involved. But because of that my kids have gotten a skewed view of the school and I really want to make sure D16 is getting the right impression as she makes her decision. I am encouraging her to go to an admitted students day in April which I think will help but love to hear your thoughts on your experience so far, if you don’t mind sharing.
Admitted (a few weeks ago) into computer science with $15,000 per year scholarship. 31 ACT, 3.9 UW GPA, lots of computer extra curricular. White male from missouri.
@myjanda I love helping in any way possible. You are correct, I will be transferring next year. The first reason is that I didn’t listen to myself when my mom and I first toured the school. I had fallen in love with UNC (I’m from NC) but felt bad because my mom had already gotten me Cuse stuff so when we toured Cuse I liked it and it was better than Penn State (which we had just visited) so I decided on it. In addition to that, I’m in Newhouse and that was made out to be a huge deal. Not saying that it isn’t, but happiness at a school obviously means more. I could stay here and be ‘okay’ at best, but I would rather be somewhere where I feel as if I am fully utilizing resources and truly feel like a part of the community. I’m honestly angry at myself for not just telling my mom how I really felt in the beginning so that I could have just gone to UNC or another school that I liked.
The next big thing was my financial situation. I receive a LOT of aid. Unfortunately, I was hit with a $4,000 bill last semester that I had no way to pay off. Thankfully the finaid office gave me another grant, but that still left about 2,000 for me to pay. My mom ended up taking out a loan (I have 2 loans in my name already), but that didn’t cover it all. Luckily I had been working and was able to pay the difference. I honestly can’t afford this school. Without parental contribution it’s too much and not only that, has caused me a huge amount of stress.
My last reason goes back to my first reason. Things here just don’t feel right. I just know that it’s not where I’m meant to be. I think that having her go to the admitted students’ day is a great idea. As a student though–and a very broke one at that lol–it’s hard attending a school where in order to really have fun money has to be spent. The atmosphere here just isn’t right for me and that would’ve been okay if I had had the chance to participate more fully in going out and having fun, visiting downtown Cuse, etc.
The honors program has really been the highlight of my education here though. I think that if this school had been a little better fit and I had had a better financial situation that I would be staying if only for that. If you–or her–have any more questions I’d love to answer them! I hope that I’ve been helpful!
Hi @Syracuse19 my daughter is an international students and she found out 3 days ago that she was accepted to newhouse. She didnt see anything about awards on myslide
Do you know if all scholarships have already been send or does it just takes time
Good luck to you !!
@eb1998 I was notified that I had received a Founders Scholarship the same day that I received my acceptance. It might be different this year though!
My son is currently a Newhouse junior. Our SU pros: Division 1 atmosphere, as a Daily Orange writer (student-run paper) you get national exposure, INCREDIBLE alumni network (3 straight summers of great internships), diverse student body, and being in Newhouse you definitely get a small school experience, and deans/profs know you. Cons: Newhouse classes are eh, and the school is crazy expensive. For three years running I have negotiated higher grant amounts. It takes me months of conversations (May through September) with SU Financial Aid and Newhouse deans, but they will part with more money if you show that your child will be or is an asset to their Newhouse family.
Admitted two weeks ago to the Maxwell School, $15,000 per year and honors college acceptance. 2190 SAT, 33 ACT 4.0 weighted GPA.
Does anyone know if I can request to switch majors within the same school I was admitted to before matriculating? I got into Maxwell as a public affairs major but I’d like to change to polisci. I’m seriously considering Syracuse but I’ve changed my plans a little and being allowed to slightly alter my major would make me even more likely to choose the school.
I am pretty sure the answer is yes. I know it can be done for the Newhouse School as well as the Whitman School, as you don’t officially declare a major until after Sophomore year.
Let’s hope some more acceptances come out today!
no acceptances this week?
