Hello im currently a juniorrr in CA
Im preparing for my portfolio
and my major is going to be either in illustration or graphic design
the thing is i like to do stuff with hands.

and i heard illustration major is ssrly good in syracuse
and graphic design in Carnegie Mellon
and isnt tthe reputation well known for CMU than syracuse?

i also know that academic records are important to get in there
but what range for act/sat and gpa do i need to be in??
and in my opinion my portfolio quality is better compared to my grades//
im worried because they look at more on grades than on portfolio quality
.......

Miniyoo, please check my visit to both Syracuse and CMU in the College Visits " forum. It shows the average SATs for each school and for the CMU School of Design.

Both require decent SATs and GPAs. I can't say which would be harder to get into since the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse is one of their tougher schools for admission.

Both programs have very strong art and design departments, although Syracuse tends to have a much bigger department. However, they also have more liberal arts requirements, which cut down a bit on your choices. Syracuse has a very strong department for illustration, which I think is stronger than that of CMU. I would say that CMU has a stronger program for graphic design and ID.

Syracuse has a computer art program, which is somewhat akin to a New Media or Digital Design program, which CMU doesn't have.

Syracuse also moved their design courses into a downtown facility starting in the sophomore year, which has its pros and cons. You should really read my "College Visit of Syracuse," which discusses this issue.

The culture of both schools and the feel from both schools is VERY different. You really need to visit each school.
