So I’m a rising sophomore and am planning to take CHSPE next year and go to CC. I want to hopefully TAG into a UC in two years. I’ve been trying to look into TAG, but don’t really know exactly what courses I need to take (GE classes and pre-major requirements). Do I need to do IGETC as well as the courses for my major listed on assist? Or not do IGETC and do the breadth/GE path? I’m planning to TAG into Davis for Statistics (want to pursue data science), and my CCC is Evergreen Valley College. Thanks.
you don’t need IGETC, you just have to have 60 transferable units. IGETC is pretty helpful for humanities majors, not so much for STEM due to the amount of major prep classes needed. follow the courses for your major on assist and double check with your counselor. also, read the TAG requirements carefully especially concerning GPA and course requirements
Thx alot, as for the 60 transferable units, I read about them before. On the UC Davis TAG criteria website, it says:
"Completed or in progress at time of TAG application:
Minimum two English composition courses (UCE)
Mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning course completed (UCM)
Completed by the end of spring term prior to transfer, four courses from at least two of the following subject areas:
Arts and Humanities (UCH)
Social and Behavioral Sciences (UCB)
Physical and Biological Sciences (UCS)"
Do the 60 units like need to like be from the above classes/criteria (ik this is a stupid question)?
the 60 units can be in anything transferable, but make sure to complete those courses they ask for. once you get to CC meet with a counselor so they can help you pick your classes and make sure to take advantage of your transfer center.
Starting college 2 years early may not be a great plan.
To start with, college is more than just academic instruction. It is a time of growth as you meet different kinds of people, make new friendships, etc. You are at an age where social skills and maturity are changing year by year. I’m not sure how well you’ll be able to relate to kids 2 years older than you, or how willing they’ll be to hang out with someone so much younger.
You may be thinking that when you finish Davis 2 years younger than everyone else that employers will be impressed, taking this as a sign of how smart you are. However the hiring picture is a bit different than you might imagine. Employers are looking for new hires that can do the job, and grades plus the interview help them assess that. But they don’t simply hire by gpa order. They assess fit as well. They will be working with you for years to come, so they’re looking for people skills and to see you’re ready for full-time employment. Your youth relative to the other grads they are interviewing may give them concern, and since they have plenty of job applicants for each position they may simply decide not to take a chance.
