So I recently registered for Math A160 and I am about half way through the course, still maintaining an A.

I have not taken any other math in community college, and my placement tests did not place me as high as math 160. I took it because the system leg me register and i WRONGLY, though that it would not come back to haunt me.

So, I submitted a Transfer Admission Guarantee to UC Santa Cruz. They recently e-mailed me and asked how it was that I was currently enrolled in math 160. They asked if I had taken the prereq, or if I had tested in to that course level. As I have done neither of those, I am unsure of how to respond.

Has anyone else made this boneheaded move? If you have, help me out with how to resolve the issue. Some info on the internet has said I can get away with just taking the prerequisite next semester, or re-taking the placement test, but I cant find anything conclusive.

Ouch. Math A160? Do you go to OCC? If so, I was always seeing signs on doors around campus that prereqs would be strictly enforced during registration.

I don’t see why UCSC would make such a big deal out of it. They should just assume that you tested into the class.

Tell them the truth. Let them know the system allowed you to register, and you went about your merry way. I’m assuming you’re SOL, but maybe they’ll cut you some slack because of a deficiency in the system which allowed you to register in the first place. DO NOT LIE.

Thanks for all the solid advice. I don’t plan on lying in any way. Except I guess in that I cheated the system a bit by taking the higher level math.

UCSC has given me five days to respond. Im thinking about just taking the placement test and sending them the results. I wont have trouble passing it, I simply could not have cared less when I first entered community college and took the initial test. Not sure why UCSC cares, and I don’t see that school as a bad option, I am more concerned with everywhere else that I apply being able to see the same thing.

When you take the test won’t it show the month and year you took it? It would be After the registration month. You should get your highschool transcript if you’ve done the prereq for that class during that time, go to your counselor, and have them over ride it, might need your teacher to agree you have the grade you say you do to show you are capable to stay in the class. Then you can say you’ve had it overridden. I’ve done that for a couple classes. Although before registering not after. Or do the same thing if you don’t have a hs transcript, but just have something approved by your professor to give to your counselor.
