Take CHEM-3A (again??) or 3B?

I'm taking a summer course at SJSU called Chem-112A. There's no lab component, but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna finish with an A or B... I'm registered for CHEM-3A and 3AL in the fall. I emailed the Chemistry department at Berkeley and they said my course is equivalent to 3A (but not 3AL).

Should I register for CHEM-3B and 3AL instead? I'm just worried that a summer course isn't good enough to prepare me for the second part of the series. My counselor recommended that I complete the whole thing at Berkeley so that no material is lost or overlapped... but then again, it might be a waste of time and units. What do you guys think? Keep 3A for the fall or just go for 3B?

you need 3AL in order to take 3BL.
Take 3AL and hold off on 3B/L

Well, normally thats true, but I e-mailed the coordinator for the courses and she said that she can set it up so that I can take the labs and lectures separately, so I for the possible choices, I made a pro/con list:

3A/3AL:
Pros: Summer experience with class, may be easier
Cons: GPA might fall (only 2 exams?), takes more time to finish series

3B/3AL:
Pros: Saves time, units
Con: Non-semester 3A may not be good enough, hard workload combined w/genetics, summer may not offer only 3BL

Just 3AL:
Pros: Can take other classes in place of 3A, less workload?
Cons: May forget 3A material

I just wanna make the best decision, so I figured I'd ask people who've been through OCHEM before

Is SJSU on a semester or quarter/trimester system? If it is quarter/trimester, then you may not cover as much material as Chem 3A did in a semester.

I think taking Chem 3B and 3AL is fine. There isn't a lot of material from 3A in 3B, so even if you miss some content, you should be fine. But of course, you still need to know the basic concepts. From what I remember, there is no specific reaction that you would need.

3B/3AL probably would not work

3B and 3BL are offered every term.

"3B/3AL probably would not work"

Why not?

^don't you screw over 3BL when you do that.

I dunno, mixing the Chem 3A material with Chem 3B seems kind of odd

You don't really screw over 3BL if you delay it. When I took 3BL during Fall 2007, a fifth of my class took 3B at least 2 semesters ago.

Ochem labs have little to do with lectures from my experience. Maybe things have changed, but I really doubt that as long as the labs are still using the manuals written by Pedersen.

Taking 3BL separately from 3B won't hurt you. If anything, it'll help you because you can take 3BL in a term when your courseload is lighter so that it won't take away valuable time from studying for ochem, which is far more important than the labs. The labs have almost nothing to do with the lecture - you'll do perfectly fine as long as you 1) take 3B BEFORE 3BL and 2) go to lecture, and even going to lecture isn't completely necessary (well, depending on the lecturer).

ok are tastybeef and tastyb33f the same or different people?

We are different people. That fool stole my handle. Note the join dates.

We're different people. I didn't realize there was already a SN so similar to this one when I made this.
