I want to take some classes this summer, and I was wondering if I should take the class online or through an actual lecture/lab component (If I take it online, I wouldn't have to drive for 40 mins everday to the university). The class in question is Calc 2, I have A.P. credit for Calc 1, and I wanted to take calc 2 out of the way, during the summer. The university that is offering it, is the University of Tampa (My normal school is Vanderbilt). Since Calc 2 may be a prereq for some medical schools, will it look bad if I took the course online? If I do take Calc 2 online, I am thinking about doing another course online as well, Intro to Statistical Methods. Let me know if this is a good/bad idea.

It could look bad, but I’m not 100% sure that they can tell since it isn’t a lab class and only 3 schools I believe require two semesters. One class at a CC/different uni/online won’t kill your application. IDK how pleasurable an online calc class is going to be.

^ did you mean they won’t be able to tell that I took the course online? I guess I can ask University of Tampa, if it was show on my transcript as an online course. Haha, this class is BOTH online and through a different uni.

Taking a pre-req online, in the summer, at a different school can only hurt you.

One class, which is only a pre-req at three schools? Strongly disagree. I agree that gobbling up pre-reqs, especially Ochem and Physics, in the summer/cc/online is a very bad idea, but one math class? I feel like that’s an overestimation of the depth in which adcoms scan your classes. They may notice you took it elsewhere, but I doubt they are going to sit there thinking great thoughts about it when everything else was done the “normal” way. Let’s compromise, do the stats in the summer and do calc in the actual semester. Doing well in calc in Fall/Spring is going to assure even the staunchest of adcoms that you weren’t trying to dodge the bullet with summer stats.

As far as seeing things online, if it isn’t mentioned as such on the transcript there is no way for them to tell and I’m not even sure there is a way to indicate that it was online for them.

I guess I can take the classes face to face, rather than online, its only a 35 min drive. Calc 2 and Physics 1 will be the only pre-reqs that I take over the summer then. I took Physics 1 at Vanderbilt over the summer (first session), and I will take Calc 2 and stats closer to home (second session).

I took the Calc BC test (calc 2) test my senior year in hs, but i only got a 3 on it, because it was the end of my senior year, and I was too busy partying.

I took Calc AB my junior year in high school. Will medical schools accept AP credit for Calc AB?

It isn’t so much the online thing, which as I mentioned may not even show on the transcript, as it is taking it at a different school and in the summer. If you plan to take either, I would take it online unless you are more comfortable learning it in a classroom or it does indeed say online on the transcript.

Most schools will. It is always best to have a calc and a stats class in college at least, with two calc classes being the necessity if you get into Harvard. The thing is, if you do get into one of the few schools that requires two calc classes you can always finish it in time to matriculate so it isn’t a biggie.
