Hello CC! I know this is definitely not the most traditional of pathways, but I was recently offered full rides to Cooper Union and The New School’s art schools, $20k a year and $40 k a year respectively. These were based solely on my visual arts portfolio, as my marks were pretty average, and my SAT scores abysmal. As much as I love art, I’ve always wanted to be an attorney and I’m not sure how viable a career as a gallery showing artist will be. I know for sure that I’m going to take either of these offers, as my only other acceptances have been to U of T for history and McGill for linguistics, both with tiny scholarships. As tempting as the prospect of free 4 years of making art at the most prestigious art institutes in the world (while living in NYC!!!) seems to me, I’m not sure how easy going to law school would be for me after this. I know there are no requirements on what major you completed when applying to law school, but would be prospects of going to ivy league law schools be tarnished with a BFA? Both schools are very prestigious, and I know Cooper’s engineers and science majors are seen in high regard. My parents are incredibly proud of my scholarship, but they’ve raised the point that if I truly wanted to go to law school, I should just go to U of T/McGill and take a more appropriate humanities major. Maybe it’s a very oversimplified plan, but would 4 years of free art school (minus NYC’s crazy living expenses, ha!) and then law school really be that impossible? Thank you so much.
