Taking a semester off and transferring

Hi everyone, I need some advice.

I’m don’t think I’ll be able to continue college next semester, my mental health has been horrible. I’m trying to transfer universities for the fall. Initially I was going to finish my sophomore year at my current school which meant that I would have over 60 credits, but now I really don’t think my mental health can take another semester and I think I need a break. After this semester I’ll only have around 45 credits. How would this affect me in the transfer process? Will I be applying as a sophomore to my new school? If anyone has any experience with taking a leave of absence and transferring please let me know.

What are you doing in regards to your mental health? Address that ASAP. Please make an appointment with a therapist or psychiatrist to determine how to address your issues. What is the problem at your current school, and will transferring solve it? Regardless, taking a semester off is a good idea.

If you don’t complete your second year at your current school, I think you’ll be coming in with sophomore status. I don’t see it as a problem. Please be sure that the college you hope to transfer to will accept all of your credits.

You should visit the academic advising center at your current school. They can help guide you through the process. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the response! I am currently seeing a therapist but I think just being at my current school and my current situation is limiting my recovery.

The main problem I have with my school is that it doesn’t have the major I wish to study and also the overall campus culture.

I’m ok with being a sophomore at a new school, I’m just wondering if schools will be questioning on my application why I’m not taking courses next semester.

No, and it’s not their business. Many people take way more than four years to complete college. There could be myriad reasons why: illness, finances, etc…
