<p>If you've mastered much of the grammar and phonology of one Romance language (such as French) and wish to pick up another -- like Spanish, am I assuming correctly that you enroll in the "intensive/accelerated elementary" course?</p>
<p>From what I've read and received, yes.</p>
<p>I speak French and I was able to read Spanish newspapers after 3 weeks of intensive self-study.</p>
<p>If you take a regular 101 course in Spanish, you will bore your ass off.</p>

<p>That's impressive. I just think I need a teacher for like a month then I'll get the hang of it. Of course, verbal versus written fluency is something else entirely -- I can sort of comprehend 20% of Spanish text with no self-study anyway.</p>
