Because of scheduling conflicts and mathematical ability that developed a little late, I will likely end up taking AP Calculus AB junior year and AP Calculus BC senior year. In my school, AB isn't just for "slackers" or anything; many people take AB and get into HYPS, and people can really only take BC junior year and Multivariable senior year if they started the accelerated math program in middle school. I realize that a lot of BC is AB, and while I'm definitely not trying to pass myself off with an easy, repetitive math class, I don't see any other option. As far as AP testing goes, I would probably take the AB test for the sake of the AP Scholar awards and timeliness. What do you think? Would taking AP Calculus BC right after AP Calculus AB be basically a blowoff course, or can I still salvage useful learning from this course sequence?

Your post is rather confusing. Do you mean that kids who get into HYPS arent taking BC senior year but rather AB?

Yes. The only people who take BC senior year are the people who would normally take AB senior year, but instead take an extra math course to get a level ahead. My schedule would have originally been, from 9th grade to 12th grade:

Geometry Honors, Advanced Algebra II Honors, Precalculus Honors, AP Calculus AB

That is the highest track besides the one taken by people who started an accelerated sequence in middle school. That’s only about 10-15 people, not all of them necessarily outstanding students or great lovers of math, and their schedule would be Geometry Accelerated, Precalculus Accelerated, AP Calculus BC, AP Multivariable Calculus.

Because I love math and wanted to learn it at a faster pace, I’m doing Precalculus outside of school. As a result, I’m taking AB junior year instead of senior year. I need to take a math class senior year, and since the accelerated people have been taking different classes for the last five or six years, I can’t just jump into BC. I wouldn’t know any of the extra math information taught to them in earlier years.

I have a similar dilemma…we have an accelerated math program in our district for middle schoolers, but I accelerated a little more, so my classes went:

8th Grade–> Algebra H
Summer before 9th–> self-studied and tested out of geometry
9th Grade–> Algebra II H
10th Grade–> Precalculus H
11th Grade–> Calculus AB AP
12th Grade–> ???

I’m taking statistics senior year and maybe BC. Taking BC as a senior would still put you above the average HYPS applicant, I think. If you plan on going into math/engineering it might be to your benefit to enroll in some MV calculus college courses. Otherwise, I think taking BC would be less stressful schedule-wise, but not necessarily a blow-off.

Your post in terms of your question (not the explanation of courses) is still relatively vague… If you’re asking if you can take AP calc AB junior year, an AP calc BC senior year and still be acknowledged by the ivies, yes it’s more than possible. In fact, I know someone that took AP calc AB as a senior who got into all of the ivies, MIT, cal tech, etc.

If that’s not the question, sorry for giving a random answer…
