I took a look at a sample for the Literature SAT2, and it appears to be about interpreting literature rather than recalling it (which makes sense since it would be hard to guarantee that every test taker had read the same set of books!) At our school, AP Lit is taken during senior year, but my D is a prolific reader and is wondering if she could perhaps take it at the end of junior year? I guess my question is - how much does AP Lit prepare you for the Lit SAT2 - and does anyone here have a kid who took this particular test before taking AP Lit? Thanks!!

It doesn’t; it prepares you for the AP Lit test

Since AP Lit is a senior class with few exceptions, I doubt many have taken the SAT2 test after the class

She sounds plenty ready to take the SAT II Lit right now. 2012 son was a strong reader but nothing too extraordinary and he took it before AP lit and did just fine. Current HS junior will take it this year with no AP lit or lang.

My suggestion would be that your daughter should take a look at the tests in the Real SAT II book, and see whether she is comfortable with the Lit test. It is definitely feasible to take the SAT II Lit ahead of AP Lit. My daughter did that, and did fine.

My son took it before his AP lit too. At his school, junior yr the best English students are in honors bc AP Lang isn’t offered. He prepped with a book (don’t remember if it was Princeton review or another) and was able to score a 770. I think he only studied for it over a couple of weeks but thought using a prep book was a good idea bc there were lit terms he needed to review.

My son took the SAT Lit test because he bombed the Math 2 test and was looking for something he could do well in without studying. He was a junior who was taking honors English, but hated English classes. He’s an avid reader, just not a fan of English teachers. He got over 700 no studying required at all beyond taking the one practice test which told him he’d probably get a good score. He did not take AP Lit senior year. In fact he jumped off the honors steamroller took an elective in Mysteries and had a ball actually enjoying an English class. Easy A+.

Thanks to all for the input!!

An AP Lit class is just about 100% irrelevant to the SAT Literature Subject Test. Someone who has read literature widely and reads closely and critically can do very well on the SAT Lit Subject Test without ever taking an AP Lit class. Apart from knowing a few key terms, there’s nothing you can really do to prepare for it. It doesn’t presume knowledge of any particular texts; it’s really just a test of your critical reading abilities using particularly challenging texts. I’ve heard it described as “SAT CR on steroids,” and that seems pretty accurate.

Be aware, though, that not many people do really well on this test. Roughly half as many students take the SAT Literature Subject Test (67,000) as take the SAT Math 2 Subject Test (140,000), but nearly 10 times as many score 750+ on SAT Math 2 (50,000) as on SAT Lit (5,300). Similarly, only about 25% more take the SAT US History Subject Test (84,000) than SAT Lit, but more than 3 times as many score 750+ on SAT US History (almost 17,000) as on SAT Lit.

My son took SAT Lit with no prep at all (not having completed AP Lit) – hadn’t realized which tests would be available that day but went ahead and took the lit test not knowing what it was about (no practice tests or any other prep). Still did quite well, though it was his lowest SAT II score (740). General test wisdom and analytic ability goes a long way.

To be completely fair, it was not uncommon at my school to take one or both of the AP English tests in your junior year without any specific class focusing on it, with fairly good results from what I understand (I myself took both with a score of 5 on each). The school trusted in the strength of its English curriculum, and a little extra prep for the specific format. So I guess what I’d say is that in this type of test a strong critical reader/writer can probably do well.

I took the Subject Test the year before I took AP Lit. Got a 640 and 4.
