Hello

Since the fall of my junior year in HS I have been taking full time dual enrollment classes at Cascadia community college. Unfortunately Cascadia does not offer rigorous proof based math classes. I have tried contacting two math professors about doing an independent study course with me and they both have turned me down.

I am currently studying out of Apostol, (the text used for Caltech's calc course and for MIT's calc w/ theory course). I am loving the process of learning more theoretical math but studying on my own is a big detractor to my success. My biggest problem so far is I don't have anyone to give me feedback on my solutions to the exercises, so I don't know if I am way off the mark on some of my answers.

Anyways, from what I have read I can take classes this fall as a non-matriculating high school student. If I can meet with the math dept., I will show them my 4.0s in Calc I and Calc II (taken at cascadia) along with my notebooks (emphasize plural) of work from Apostol to hopefully get the access code for 134.

Any thoughts on the feasibility of this? I am loving math more and more every day and I don't want to wait another year for a challenging and rigorous class! Also, please don't focus your comments too much on the difficulty of 134; I know, I have looked at their Psets and exams. I just want to know if its going to be possible to get both the necessary instructors signature and the math dept.'s access code to the course.

It is definitely worth a try. It does sound like the perfect class for you. But it will be up to the instructor and math advisor.

My daughter is a rising HS sophomore and will be taking upper-division Latin and intro Ancient Greek classes this coming fall – the profs were both very happy to give her permission to join the classes.

In addition to instructor permission, there is a gatekeeper for Math 134 in math advising from whom you will need to obtain an add code for this class (she could presumably also provide the dept signature): Brooke Miller, miller@math.washington.edu.

Math 134 is always a small class and never fills, so I don’t see you would not be able to join the class if you can persuade the math advisor of your qualifications – only 2 students are registered so far, and the class size is typically in the teens with a limit of 30 vs 120 and always full for the regular calc 1xx series.

Note that Math 134 often has students from the UW’s early entrance programs, so don’t be surprised if there are students in the class who are actually younger than you!

Wow, Latin and Ancient Greek? That sounds very challenging to say the least.

Thank you so much for the contact in the math department, that will be extremely helpful! Would it be appropriate to email her within the next couple of days? Or should I wait until we get closer to Autumn quarter?

One more question: Do you know of any other ways to further prove/show my abilities in mathematics to help convince the math advisor?

Thank you so much for all of the information, I really appreciate it!

I would contact her right away. If you don’t hear back, try again in early August.

As for evidence, I think your post here was quite persuasive. 5 on AP Calc BC is the prereq, but your 4.0s in math 124/125 are even better. What the math advisor will be looking for is your attitude and passion about math. It was explained to me that the course is for “students who would bring a math book to read at the beach.”

Ok great! I also emailed my calculus teacher from last quarter and asked him to write me a recommendation to take the class. We got along very well and I earned a 98% in his class so I expect the recommendation to be good.

That quote made me laugh, because as I looked over to my nightstand I noticed have two books on calculus and one on string theory as my recent reading material! Thank you so so much for the help!

An update:

I was given permission to take the class. Although I am officially on the wait list until the first day of the quarter as I am not matriculating, it sounds like there will almost certainly be room for me. Also, my HS will be using the class for credit on my transcript.

I am very excited and cannot wait for class in September!

Awesome! Best of luck!
