Taking Orgo in high school

Hi Im thinking of taking orgo after school at a local cc.
My concern is if i get a low grade in the class, would that affect my gpa/chances at admissions in med school?
I definitely plan on taking it again at my 4-year university but I just want to get a head start and have a feel of what orgo is like.

Any college level classes will be accounted for in med school application.
A bad score in org will be damaging your future attempt in med school quest. You must retake failed org class in college and wish your college gpa is all As, good luck.

There is no grade replacement in med school application.

If you take just one class at this CC and do not need the credit for your application to medical school, then there is no way the medical school will know about the grade unless you tell them.

^ If the choice is between lying about having taken the class and not taking the class, I would go with not taking the class.

see p. 25 above When entering coursework, you must include information and corresponding grades for every course
in which you have ever enrolled in any U.S., U.S. Territorial, or Canadian postsecondary institution,
regardless of whether you earned credit…

see p. 7 above which in part, I certify that the information in this application and associated materials is current, complete, and accurate to the best of my knowledge.

most colleges submit grades to National Student Clearinghouse… Not if, but when they find out that you were not truthful, you could have an acceptance revoked, you could be tossed out of med schools holding a bunch of debt…

Can you audit it? Yes, you would have to take orgo again in college, but that would solve the grade conundrum and would probably be a good idea anyway.

What’s the rush? It would be better if you took Organic Chemistry at a four year college. You really need to learn and understand the material, not just get the class over with. If you mess up this class it will haunt you.

Audits still have to reported on AMCAS and an official transcript from the college needs to be sent to ACMAS when applying to medical school. (p.15)

Additionally, if the OP later takes Ochem after first auditing it, the subsequent class is marked as a “repeated” class by AMCAS. (p.32)

Watch the Organic Chemistry videos on Khan Academy or something similar. You’ll get “a feel for what orgo is like” and won’t take the chance of a poor grade hurting your transcript before you even enter college.

yikes everyone i just checked this forum and well im already taking it… i hate myself now that everyone is saying this is a bad idea. I actually did audit it but I find it hard to believe that it would hurt me when im really trying to learn for the fun of learning. I have no idea how medical school application works but am i allowed to explain myself later? like there’s nothing i can do now is there?

If you’re auditing it then there won’t be a grade so it’s not really an issue.

Might want to think about why you asked a question and then didn’t check the answer for 3 months though.

I was really new to CC at this point so I didnt know…

There is plenty information on the net you can search, CC is only a very lame forum comparing to SDN and others. At SDN you will be chestersized. The “fun” of going to med school is after graduation, at that time you can call yourself a Doctor, before then, you have to be careful every step of the way, especially when GPA and Mcat are concerned.

Med schools will have an algorithm and that grade is the only one that counts even if you take orgo in college. Since you’re in highschool odds are this grade would sink your application.

Are you auditing or enrolled in the class?
If enrolled, switch to audit ASAP.

What year are you? Jr? Sr?
How is it going so far?

“Chestersized”?

“chastised” typo, typo

LOL

Lol! Ok, I wondered if it was premed slang I hadnt heard of.

@MYOS1634 hi thank you for commenting. Yes i did audit and i am a senior in high school. Wait so you’re saying odds are this will sink my application? Meaning it probs will come against me later during the application process?

I tried to look for similar situations or open a new discussion on SDN but i have no idea how to…

If you audit, do you get a grade? Audits typically don’t get a transcript. You’d still have to report it but it wouldn’t be the same effect as taking the class for a grade and getting a D.
If you are unofficially auditing, don’t get a grade and don’t have a transcript, yes you’re fine.
If you have a grade on a transcript yes this could sink your application as the algorithm cutting applicants could automatically cut you depending on what grade you got.
And if the deadline is too late for a drop or withdrawal it’d be a problem.

For kids currently in HS reading this:
Organic chemistry is 1) one of the hardest classes a pre-med will take 2) it’s weedout 3)it requires strong mastery of college content beyond AP.
For this reason, it’s not recommended that even well prepared freshmen take it… Let alone high school students.

@MYOS1634 no i don’t get a grade but i will get a transcript that says I audited this class.
