Taking "Q&A with Dean J" submissions

mullins, call the transfer office. all your questions will be answered and you won't have to worry about the info being wrong. You won't look stupid for wanting to have everything right so don't be scared! :) good luck.

CALL!!

If a student waits until junior year of high school to start a foreign language, is said student, who will only have 2 yrs of foreign language, not able to be admitted to UVA due to this lack?

I had thought 2 years of foreign language was acceptable. I will now go check the website admission requirements!

marm, UVa does not have requirements for admissions in terms of courses; they have preferences. If someone does not fulfill those requirements, it's not the end of the world; they theoretically still have a chance at admission (meaning that, if the rest of their application was good, they would have a shot.)

Now, in terms of preferences, UVa likes to see 4 years of a language. Again, there's no requirement.

it's better to check AND THEN ask your question.

Dean J:

For the College of Arts and Sciences eassay prompt (What work of art, music, science, or literature has surprised, unsettled or challenged you, and in what way?) can you use a film?

Thank you in advance for your help in this matter.

Dean J,

How often do students select the "Topic of your Choice"" option for the Common App essay, and how do you guys in the admissions office look upon that?

Dean J

Does transferring to UVA as a second semester sophmore increase your chances of admission to McIntire, as opposed to applying straight to McIntire

Thanks

an you use a film?

[/QUOTE]
Sure, why not. It better not be a film based on a book, though. :)

This is our first year with the Common App, so we don't know!

Internal McIntire applications are due in November, so a student who starts at UVa as a sophomore in the Spring has missed the application process.

Dean J-

How much weight does the admssions process at U-Va give to the SAT writing score as compared to the verbal and math scores -- more, less or equal?

Dean J,

What GPA scale does UVA use when submitting the average GPA statistics, College Board's? Does that include APs/IBs as being weighted? What about honors?

Dean J,

Are AP test scores used for admissions purposes, or only for placement?

When I look at the Virginia supplement online on the University's website, one of your supplement essay questions deals with discussing a local/national/international issue. However, when I view the Virginia supplement via the Common App website, that option disappears, while the others remain. Am I reading this correctly, and is this a valid essay option?

Dean J, I saw UVA website said that if I want to study art as major or minor, I should submit my art porfolio to department of art seperately.
I'll apply Engineering school with art as minor. My question is that how admission office takes account into my art achievement as EC, since Engineering school can not see my art portfolio? Thanks in advance!

Dean J,
Hi!
Do international students receive likely letters?
Thank you!

Dean J, is there a standard an applicant must have for their test scores? I've read that it's not EVERYTHING, but I would like to know what the lowest test score UVA has ever admitted.
