Taking summer classes at another institution

Hi,

I'm currently an international student at USC. Over the summer, I'd like to take an online class at a community college and transfer that class to USC. However, I keep hearing different things as to how that works for international students: the community college told me they'll need my original I-20, my visa, passport, I-94 (which I don't even have right now, because I'm back home) etc, whereas USC told me that's not true at all and they should only need a letter from USC telling them that I'm allowed to take a class at the community college. Have any of you internationals ever tried to take a summer class at another college/uni? What's the usual procedure? Do you really need to submit all those documents? The college even said that it might be a problem that I don't have an I-94 right now... I don't get why.

Thanks!
