Would it be possible to take something at a local community college over the summer that would be transferrable for credit at USC in the fall? Maybe fulfill some gen ed requirement?

Yea, it is, if you live in SoCal (or maybe even NorCal). Just go online, do a search on "articulation agreements," and you'll hopefully get a list of colleges that have articulation agreements with USC.

An articulation agreement is basically a list of JC courses that correspond to, and are directly transferable, to USC courses.

And you absolutely have to live in SoCal or NorCal? So basically, that's not an option for internationals?

They are pretty strict with general education requirements. Other classes, such as general chemistry/biology/physics/calculus can be transferred over from community colleges outside of California.
