Heya! Does anyone know if one could possibly take the same class twice (or multiple times) either because they needed to take that class for a grade but didn't do so the first time (as they felt it right to take it as p or np) or because they failed it?

Ahh sorry for the ammendments! This is in regards to the first post: is it legal to take the same class for a p or np then in the following quarter(s) take it for a grade?

Can you take a class for a P/NP and then for a grade?
Technically yes, nothing will prevent you from registering for it. If you passed the first time though (getting the “P”), you won’t get credit the second time around so even if you got an A, that won’t factor into your overall GPA.

Honestly, if you have time to be repeating classes for fun, you need to find something else to do with your life.

Ha! I was just thinking of worse case scenarios that’s it! Anyway astarina, regarding your second paragraph, what if the class I decided to take twice (and let’s say the first time I decided to go with a p or np because I wasn’t confident of the grade, but I got a P) was for my major, wouldn’t that mean the next time I take it (for a grade) affect my gpa? Seeming that majors only take class for a grade

Since we’re talking hypotheticals, I would say just DON’T do it. Double check all your classes to make sure they can be taken P/NP before sticking with the option – they give you 4 weeks to change it so there’s no excuse about deadlines! That also means you have 4 weeks to decide your confidence level and if it was a class that required a letter grade the more sound option would be to drop it.

(Not all major classes require a letter grade, which is even more reason to double check your degree requirements every time you register for classes)

I don’t know if it’s as simple as that because it’s very explicitly stated that P/NP is not allowed in your major and you don’t get credit for repeating a class you got a “P” in. Tricky business
