I've taken the sat in march 2010. I got a really horrible score on it. And I would like to retake it, however, my college apps are due on January 15th, would it be too late to take the test on January 22?

as long as colleges have you on their college board list. your application is complete if the desired college has all your stuff with them by the 15th. Send them your previous scores before the end of Dec. You can update it later ie you can send your Jan 11 score to the college once its out. just make sure they have something.

So i should just send in my horrible score 1st? Then I should take the January 22 test and wait for 4 weeks and then resend them to the colleges?

anymore more input would be appreciated

Schools generally tell you what the last accepted testing date is for ED, RD, etc. For RD that is usually December, with scores being released later in the month prior to the 1/1 and 1/15 deadlines. I wonder since you knew you were not happy with your score last spring why you are waiting until January to retest… a little late now, but today’s December test date would have been a much better alternative, still with plenty of prep time.

At any school that requires scores your application is going to be incomplete until they receive them. Call schools you are interested in to see if they will ‘update’ your scores past the application deadline. I do know that if you are waitlisted schools will take into account any ‘new information’ such as grades, honors/awards, and higher test scores. Even if the schools will not accept the scores now, it would be worth it to take the test if you feel you can do considerably better. You would then have them in case you are waitlisted.

You must check colleges first to determine last test date accepted. Majority of those with Jan app deadlines accept through Dec and thus the Jan test would be too late (and thus suggested activity above – send earlier test and then try to update – would be your only chance and they could make decision before Jan test score arrives). But a very large minority accept through Jan test date even though the test itself occurs after the app deadline. You need to contact the colleges and find out.

Even if the college accepts Jan test and you can hold off sending scores, you cannot assume that is your best situation. What that can mean is that you go to the end of list of decisions to be made and by the time they get to you they might have decided not to admit any more into the program you want. In other words being last on the decision pile at some colleges may create a disadvantage.

Even if they take Jan tests, they are going to want you to send the scores blind by designating the college to automatically receive scores as soon as they come out, such as one of your free sends. The reason is because it is highly questionable the test score will be timely for consideration if they allowed you to wait to order it sent until after the score comes out. You are assuming you will score better; it is possible you will do worse and thus you could end up sending a score blind that makes your chances of acceptance worse than what you have with current score. That is a risk you have to consider if you don’t send prior score.
