I was just accepted to the Arts and Science school and I'm waiting for financial aid. I have a lot of questions about this place. Are the students here generally hard working/serious? How much financial aid do they usually give? Thanks for the answers.

i second that! I’ve read alot about Syracuse and would like to know even more. Thanks to anyone who replies to the threads

There are a bunch of students here who decided to enroll at Syracuse because how the financial aid the school offered. That may seem like a great reflection of how great the financial aid is at Syracuse but it depends on your family’s EFC. The majority of the student population here at Syracuse are extremely hardworking. You will hardly ever see the Architecture Students because they are always working on a project. Some Newhouse students will also end up being M.I.A because they are just so busy; the same goes for the Engineers but I’d say at attend MSP coming up this middle April if you want a taste of what it’s like at Syracuse.

Ahhh thanks for the reply. That is good to hear because I am not a big party person. Also, I am pretty poor so the financial aid info is good.

They just busted about 150 underage students at a single campus bar Monday night. Not even a weekend. I think that gives you a little more rounded view of the seriousness of the students.

They have a day off school every spring in April which is supposedly a campuswide day of presentations and projects. The majority of students spend the day partying on their porches. The administration is going nuts this year trying to figure out how to make the students get serious on this day.

I won’t argue with the academic reputation of some of the schools and the hardworking students, but sorry… but they do party hearty as well at Syracuse. Let’s be honest. The school has never really shaken off that reputation.

jipi: try to get the facts straight before posting…Frats were put on probation so everyone was out on Marshall Street last night; the 150 underage who were given citations were not found with alcohol; just on premises…IMO, the fraternity council probably tipped off the cops b/c the frats were officially off limits as of yesterday…

Every school has kids who party every night of the week; Syracuse is no exception…there are all types of students there and plenty of them (12000-150 from last night) were not out partying last night…

It would behoove you not to take jipi’s advice. He’s probably some kid who did the wrong thing and was busted for it and now is hostile towards the University. I can guarantee you that Syracuse University is not in anyway as jipi mentioned. I will begin by saying of course, there is no University, no matter how brainiac of a University it is that goes without partying or drinking and Syracuse as rodney clearly mentioned IS no exceptions. But I can promise you that the number of students that stick their noses all day and all night in their schoolwork far exceeds the number of students that love to party and we’re talking somewhat about an 80:20 ratio. When you finally arrive on campus; if you do choose to attend, you will discover that you are welcome to join the many group of students that put academics first before anything else.

I cannot say as to whether students actually do party on weekdays or not but I will tell you that if I were to go look for a place to party during the weekdays–be it a frat party, club, or even a house party, I will definitely be dissapointed.

I think my biggest question is if Syracuse is worth the money.

I don’t qualify for financial aid (but my college fund is supposed to cover grad and undergrad), and I would be going only on a $12,000/yr merit scholarship. So, Syracuse is way expensive.

I’ve been admitted to UW-Seattle which is a fabulous school as well, and I’d be paying in state tuition which is a huge amount of money to save. Additionally, I got a huge scholarship at Chapman (which makes it pretty much the same price as UW).

Right now, I’m interested in Psychology, so, honestly, is Syracuse worth the extra money??

If you are a west-coaster, and are sure you want to major in psychology, I see no reason to “shlep” across the country to attend SU…that being said, many people want a change of scenery…$12,000 is not spare change and it probably makes Syracuse about equivalent to the cost of an OOS public for you,but if you are planning on graduate school for psychology, UW is probably a better option…

thank you!
although i am not for sure on anything, but psych is a definite interest. (and the psych department at uw is fantastic!)

do you know anything about honors at syracuse? and would that change your opinion at all?

Something for you to consider…my S is across the country at Colorado College (we live outside Syracuse). He faced the same challenges, only he wanted small liberal arts. When the majority of the best LAS are on the east coast, he wondered if it was worth going across the country. he did mainly because of the block plan at CC and he is a ski nut (not that he gets much time to ski). CC is only one of two schools with the block plan (you take one course at a time for 4 weeks for a total of 4 classes in one semester). So he went…now, he can not come home for Thanksgiving-classes end Wed and it takes a full day to travel here and a day back. So he would end up being home and tired for 2 days. He missed his flight at Christmas (what can I say, he is a freshman…)and almost wasn’t going to make it home due to all flights being booked (he stayed in Denver for 2 days with his roommates family). The distance is something to consider, all else being equal. Personally, I went to SU and if you plan on grad school, I don’t think it is worth the money. Most perspective employers will look at your grad school more. You have excellent choices at both places! Good luck with your decision (your mom will like my post!)

Haha, my mom would like that post.

Thank you for your opinions, it really does help.

yea i agree with House of London… the fact is that every campus drinks. It seems to me that Syracuse has a “work hard play hard” philosophy more than anything else. Then again I have no idea, i just sent in my deposit for next year lol.
