Talk to me about your bed

Seeing the photo above (great job!) reminds me of a bedding problem H and I had when we first married. When we were dating, H was stationed in Hawaii. He needed a new bed and decided to buy a king mattress. We tried a few put and picked one (I think it was a Serta). He went on his own to buy sheets for it.

A year later when we married, my in-laws gift for us was a whole bedroom set. By then we were living in MD and drove down to Furnitureland area of NC. We picked something out and three months or so later everything was delivered. At the time, our mattress/box spring was just on a cheap metal frame.

So the guys put the furniture together, and then went to put our boxsprings (two twins) and then the mattress. Well, the boxsprings did not fit, they were too long. Come to find out, our bed was a Cal King! Never once did this come up in conversation when buying the mattress - I had never even heard of a Cal King or knew the difference. Neither of us are tall (my husband is 5’9") so never would we have wanted a Cal King as we would prefer a wider mattress, not a longer one. So our bed would not fit the new furniture.

We ended up just purchasing new King boxsprings and kept the Cal King mattress since it was only about 18 months old. So for years, our mattress was about an two inches narrower than the box spring but our bedding covered it. However, the sheets my husband originally bought were a very masculine dark stripe and needed new ones to go with our new decor as a married couple. Well, no internet back then and MD did not sell Cal King sheets anywhere locally. MIL, who lives in CA, bought us several sets and sent them to us.

One other thing - the bedframe had no support in the middle, and the wooden slats that went across could not hold up the boxsprings. My husband ended up having to build wooden supports in the middle like pictured above.

And finally after about 18 years, we got a new mattress that is finally the correct size, a regular King!

Not a fan of foam mattresses. Haven’t slept on one so far that I liked. Have a very firm mattress though.

This thread has been helpful. We’re considering buying a new bed when we move but can’t decide what to get.
We bought an adjustable bed at Costco a few years ago. At first we loved it, then found we rarely used the features and felt it wasn’t worth the cost. As it turned out, the people who bought our house wanted it. It’s not something I’d have done in their shoes, but maybe they replaced the mattresses after closing.

About 4 years ago we paid the huge amount for the top of the line sleep number mattress and the adjustable bedframe.
The mattress is still wonderful. The adjustable part not so much since we didn’t want a split King. If one of us wants to put the head up, the other has to want to….

We also realized the bed at a hotel we stayed at was much better than ours, so I replaced mine after 32 years(guarantee for 20 years) we bought a new one, top of the line, that’s what the delivery guy told us. We bought a second one as back up after we slept in it for a month, so wonderful, we’ve been sleeping like a baby on our new bed. I’m now glad I have a back up, with the price of everything goes through the roof, that’s our inflation hedge, lol.

I bought the Saatva Latex Hybrid six months ago, and it has been amazing! Firmer than what we had previously, but still very comfortable. Bonus- my husband’s snoring has been reduced by 80% (my guesstimate). I also like the construction of the sides - they don’t sag.

So - any recent experiences buying new mattresses? I would like to replace the mattress in our guest room, which is admittedly where I usually sleep due to snoring (mostly not mine). It’s an extremely old box spring and mattress on a metal frame. It’s not uncomfortable per se for me, but neither husband nor son (when he visits) are really satisfied with it. (They like a firmer mattress than me.) I also think I would sleep a bit better and maybe avoid a bit of back pain with a new mattress.

I like to sleep cool so likely would not want memory foam. I gather I could just get a new mattress and leave the box spring in place. There’s a lot stored under the bed so much as I’d like an adjustable frame, that probably won’t happen.

I use these deep pocket sheets https://a.co/d/dmik1FP so hopefully they would fit the new mattresses?

I go back to the days where you went to Sears and laid down on a few mattresses and picked one set. So like many others said, buying mattresses today is quite different. I wouldn’t say price is no object but I don’t need to budget either. I’m thinking of visiting the top two Yelp rated local places rather than national chains - don’t suppose anyone’s been to these places?

We’re in the market for a new mattress too and I really like the Casper Wave hybrid. I have been keeping track of which mattress I really like when we’re visiting people or even at hotels, and the Wave has been my favorite. We haven’t bit the bullet yet to buy one because we got a new topper that has been wonderful and extended the life of our current mattress (which my H loves).

@momofboiler1, I’m in the market for a new topper. Can you share what kind you got?

We have purchased recently 2 type of Memory foam mattresses. The Nectar mattress for our guest room which came with a nice bed package which included: Padded Headboard, Mattress Frame, Mattress protector, Sheets and Pillows. It is Medium soft in Firmness.

For our Primary bedroom, we purchased a Layla mattress which has a Medium firm side and Medium soft side. This mattress came with a Bed sheet/pillow/mattress protector package. We have had this mattress for about 1.5 years and are very happy. I have had no issues with being too hot with the Layla vs. our old Temperpedic.

My neighbor recently purchased the Layla Hybrid which has coils surrounded by the Memory foam and are very satisfied with their purchase. No issues with being too hot with this mattress also.

As I have recommended before, IKEA! You can lay down on their samples. I don’t think you can possibly spend more than $1000 for a mattress there. I really, really love mine.

I went with the Turmerry “organic” latex mattress. I needed a cooling mattress and also one that would help me with joint pain. It’s been wonderful.

We recently stayed at a Four Seasons and fell in love with their bed! So comfy. We ended up buying their branded mattress (made specifically for this hotel chain) with a soft topper. Came with a set of luxurious sheets. Was it overpriced? You bet. Do we like it? You bet. Was it a hassle-free mattress shopping for what we knew would work for us? You bet. No returns needed.

We tried a latex hybrid and HATED it. But we love memory foam. It’s so personal! And I kind of think mattresses may be a bit like jeans – everyone is a little bit different so you can’t count on the same size, brand, model, brand, to actually be exactly the same.

We also have an IKEA mattress - a very firm spring mattress (forgot which style, but extremely reasonable cost). Then we added a 2" memory foam topper from Amazon, and a good mattress pad. I’ve slept in 4" memory foam mattresses, but find them difficult to move and turn. Spring mattresses alone tend to be too firm. Works for us.

Update again. After much research, I’ve decided I would be happiest with a traditional mattress and box spring set. And narrowed it down to the options below (the Hilton bed would be a economy compromise, but I’m fine spending somewhat more.) I would use our old metal frame for now. I thought of testing some out at a local mattress place but think the actual in store samples would be different than anything I buy online. So I would just take the plunge!

Does anyone have any experience with these companies?

Also, do mattresses have Black Friday sales?

I’m thinking low profile box spring because our current set is only 12", half box spring. All mattresses are much thicker than 6" now! The Waldorf Astoria would also require a $225 in home set up, but they say they could remove the old set which would be a great help.

The most expensive option. I could just buy the mattress directly from Sterns and Foster with free delivery and put it on our old box spring. Or get their flat foundation. https://www.stearnsandfoster.com/bases-landing-page/flat-foundations/v/634/

And the Hilton, but after all my research I’m kind of excited about something a little more elaborate.

Just made my purchase after trying out mattresses at both Mattress Firm and Macy’s (as a double check). Much to my surprise, I did not like the piillow tops or hybrids. Not to my surprise, I did not like the memory foam.

My final choice was the Beautyrest Black C-class medium. Every time I went from another mattress back to it, I kept liking it better and better. I relax a lot on the bed so wanted to be able to move around. And one minute testing an adjustable base convinced me I needed one!

Apparently mattress sales run from before Veteran’s Day on well past Black Friday. There was a $300 gift card offer with the mattress purchase. Macy’s also gave me $100 off the base for buying the mattress in store, and 10% off the base with a code from their website. And I joined their points reward program so whenever I get and redeem the gift card, I should have about $30 in points to use also. So not sure if this qualifies as a good buy considering how much I spent!

The bed will be delivered a few days before son comes to visit for a week. It will be in the guest room where I normally sleep, so he will sleep beautifully while I deal with husband’s snoring.
