TAMS(Texas Academy of Math and Science)

I really want to be a part of TAMS and I am worried that I may not get in. I have copy and pasted all my activities and honors. I did poorly on my SAT and did not have a chance to retake it. If anybody could help chance me for TAMS I will be really grateful. Also on my essay for TAMS I made a grammatical error and in the 8th grade my art teacher wrote on my report card "Needs to be more attentive", I've had one 1 B in my all time track record from 7-10th grade and I'm really ashamed of myself. Please Help me.

If you have so many EC why you get low SAT? SAT is college exam. TAMS is college. If you want to be successful in math and sciences then get SAT score up. My daughter get waitlisted with TAMS for 2080 with 770 in math. She don’t have ECs but they not important. You just sign up for every club in school. College will know that. They know everything. Get your SAT score to 2000+ if you want to have chance.

-Tzu

I mean I have a lot of E.C, and in each one I hold some type of position. I don’t just go around signing up for random clubs. On a practice ACT I am capable of doing really well, but I just can’t seem to do well on the SAT. Most of those clubs you see have some type of position associated with them, I do things because I like to do them, not cause some bogus college will pick me. There is no correlation between EC and the SAT. I appreciate you taking the time to chance me for TAMS, but maybe it’s not because your daughter got a 2080 on her SAT, it’s probably because she didn’t have many EC(these help to show interests). I know people that have gotten in with a something in the 600’s in math.

-mangoboy

Mangoboy, what kind of name is that? First you get proper name and then I will respect you. What even TAMS will not accept if you if you have name of fruit boy. EC means you get good SAT there is correlation. My daughter have no EC, except for 4th in state science fair and internship at NASA during summer. But thats it. If you have good EC then why not be good SAT? 2000 is not acceptable for honor in TAMS. My husband and me yell at little Hyun-Tae for not good SAT. I know process. Trust me. ACT for losers. You quit on SAT? Then you weakling. In my country, it is honor to take SAT Testing. It is real test for college. If you can not get over 2100 then you will struggling in TAMS. I forsee in future that you will fail if accept at TAMS. Your motto: All EC then I get SAT. My motto: Get SAT up and do the right thing. Only then will the admissions accept you and you will prosper in TAM environment. We will keep in touch.

-Tzu

Tzu, I don’t mean to be rude, but if you haven’t figured out, his real name isn’t “mangoboy”. It’s an alias. Also, SAT isn’t everything. The TAMS admission even said so theirselves. They look at your entire profile at a case-to-case basis. Mangoboy got an 1880, 700 in math. That’s pretty impressive for a high school sophomore. Is it acceptable for TAMS? Sure. Could he have done better? Absoluteley. But, grades, activities, and other factors will determine mangoboy’s acceptance. Mangoboy has shown tremendous interest in math/science and he will make an amazing student at TAMS if accepted. Ponder about that for a while.

Mangoboy,

I first would like to highly apologize for Enthalpy’s apparent condescending tone. While Enthalpy may be trying to help, they are talking down to you and that is not right. Now, moving on to your question and how I can relate. I applied for early decision to TAMS this same year that you have applied. I scored approximately the same score on the SAT as you did, definitely not higher then a 2000 like Enthalpy says is almost required for TAMS, and I was accepted a few days ago. Like Curryy has said as well, you show tremendous interest in math and science which will make a high point to the TAMS admissions. SAT is not everything in TAMS decision making process, not even “most” of the decision, it is however an important factor. I am sure they will look over your one grammatical error that you have made on your essay as well. Moving on to grades, having one B in your 7th-10th grade years is actually amazing academically and you will do fine in that aspect. You also have a great amount of EC. EC is actually an important factor in decision making process not only in TAMS but in several colleges around the United States now. Colleges are looking a lot at EC and overall character rather than simply looking at your academics.

Just one tip that I can not stress enough. During the interview you MUST be yourself. The interview is not difficult at all nor is it a hostile environment, you feel relaxed in a formal kind of way. The interviewer’s are friendly. Just make sure you remain yourself at all times and answer questions completely honestly because you never know why they are asking the question they are asking. Unless you say something like “My parents are the ones who want me to go to TAMS, I really don’t care” or show some kind of dis interest in the program, you will be fine in the interview. Again, just be yourself. One major purpose of the interview is so that they can see whether your a social person or someone who tends to themselves almost exclusively. They want students who will be social and interact with their classmates and will respond well to the dorm life.

I know I wrote a lot, but please make sure you take all of this into account, and if you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to ask!

Thank you Whoop96 for the encouragement and taking the time to write so much. I will be myself and be honest, thank you again, it really improves my hopes :)

Hi everyone,
My name is Xenin (nickname), and I’m an eighth grader. I’m interested in TAMS as I have been for about 8 months. I took a practice SAT on my own yesterday and here are my scores:

Total: 1440
M:640
S:400
R:400

it’s a practice SAT I did on my own after studying for a few days, so don’t judge me. I still have 2 more years to practice before I apply for TAMS. The amount of EC’s I have is pitiful. I’m very shy. But, I’m told I work well in groups. I’m in choir and in 7th grade I made Region in 15th chair and this year I made it in on 5th chair.
Please tell me ways I can improve my admission for TAMS. I would really appreciate it!!!

Thank you for taking the time to read this!!! -Xenin aka HaruHarumi

The very first thing you need to work on is your SAT score. But you have 2 more years till you take the real one so you have time to improve that. When I was in middle school, I didn’t have much EC’s either. When you get to high school, make sure to have more. Get involved and show TAMS that you do community service too (examples I put in is volunteering at elderly homes and involvement in church activities). When you get to high school, make sure to develop a good relationship with your teachers because they are the ones who will write your recommendation letters and these letters are very important because they show your character. Make sure you have good grades (A’s) especially in math and science!! Good Luck!

Can someone that has been to a interview day explain to me more about the questions and how the math tests are? Plus it would be helpful if you can tell me how TAMS accepts people at the point of interview day and further? Thank you so much, any help is greatly appreciated!!
