hi. how is the social life at TAMUG? is it a party school? How is the town's atmosphere? is it easy to get around from the campus? And how are the dorms and bathrooms? I have a son attending this fall. any other information about the college is appreciated. thanks!

I can’t speak to the social scene or the city of Galveston. We went on a campus tour last summer. The campus is on an island (literally) and small which is good. You can walk to any building from the dorms within minutes. The dorms look like your average dorm. The dorm we looked at reminded me of the rooms at Mosher at TAMU (25 years ago when I was there). The room housed 2 people and shared a bathroom with another room. The information I read stated the residents are responsible for cleaning the bathroom as there is no housekeeping service.

Most of the discussions about TAMUG I have viewed on this site have been positive. The students are Aggies, attend the sports activities, and observe the same traditions. TAMUG have SALT camp (their version of Fish Camp). Because TAMUG is on the water, there is a rowing team and sailing team. If your son is truly interested in being an Aggie, then TAMUG is a good choice. He will be surrounded by others who have a similar goal…getting to TAMU. Having served in the military in austere locales, I can tell you it’s not the location, it’s what you make of it.

I agree with TxAggie86’s post concerning TAMUG. My daughter just completed her freshman year there.

Galveston is a beach city. The population swells on weekends, holidays, and summers. TAMUG is located on Pelican Island separated by a draw bridge from Galveston Island. The best mode of transportation to get from campus to Galveston, is by car. Galveston is easy to get around by car. It has some nice attractions and restaurants. For shopping, there is a small convenience store (Valero) with a gas station at the edge of campus (you can walk to it) and for other stores, you will need to drive to Galveston for the Krogers, Randalls, Walmart, Academy, and Target. To go to the closet major mall, he will have to go on I-45 approx. 30 minutes to Baybrook. There are stores and restaurants throughout Galveston however, most are around the Seawall, 61st, and the Strand. For some more information about Galveston go to galveston dot com.

As far as getting to classes from the dorms, that is extremely easy. TAMUG is a small campus with less than 2000 students. Class sizes are small. Of course the core classes that all freshman have to take, will be larger in size (but still small in comparison to the class sizes at TAMU).

The dorms are typical college type dorms. To get the best walking around room, you will need to bunk the beds. There is a lot of big, bulky furniture in the rooms. There is a total of 5 dorms on campus. There are two dorms (Albatros and Polarias) near the convenience store that are long and narrow with kitchens and private bathrooms in them. The other dorms are your typical suite style (two rooms sharing a bathroom) dorm rooms. Two of the dorms (Oceans and Hullabaloo) have private balconies. Here are the floor plans to the dorms: [TAMUG Residence Life](Campus Living & Learning - Texas A&M Galveston, TX)
As TxAggie said, there is no bathroom housekeeping service provided.

You are required to have the meal plan. There is only one cafeteria on campus.
